Breitenbach, as the westernmost community of the Palatinate, lies in a southwest-facing valley basin and is almost completely surrounded by a ridge between 430 meters and 470 meters high.

With a length of about 12 (km), the panorama route is perfect for a day hike - don't forget your packed lunch!

This route lies, except for the neighboring Höcherberg (Saarland), higher than the surrounding area, offering splendid wide views in all directions on the circular route: to the north and northwest towards the Potzberg and the Königsberg, the Prussian mountains near Kusel, and the Freisen heights, the peaks of the Hunsrück such as the Erbeskopf and to the west the Schaumberg in the neighboring Saarland; to the southeast the view extends far over the Landstuhl Bruch, the Sickingen heights, the Donnersberg and the distinctive silhouette of the Haardt ridge; in optimal weather even the peaks of the northern Black Forest can be seen.

    Author’s recommendation

In the "Bergmannsbauern Museum" in Breitenbach, the history of mining is vividly depicted - a visit is worthwhile.

    Safety information

    NOTICE:

We strive to announce all closures caused by forestry work, hunting parties, etc. on our hiking trails in the region on this platform.

Nevertheless, there are situations where hiking trails are closed and we were not informed.

Any hiker who walks through closed areas (marking tape, "Caution Hunting" etc.), even on weekends, acts grossly negligent and is responsible for their own actions!

Part of the hiking trail runs over narrow paths.

    Good footwear is required.

The areas in the nature reserves are unsuitable for prams!

Especially in autumn, it should also be noted that fallen leaves on the ground can cover unevenness, roots, stones, or holes in the path.

You must expect impairments of this kind when hiking.

If you believe certain sections are impassable for you, you should bypass them.

Especially in adverse weather conditions, natural paths can become muddy and slippery.

    Breitenbach

Breitenbach with its districts Bambergerhof and Grube Labach as well as several outlying farms lies directly on the border to Saarland. First mentioned in documents in 1303, the impressive village, which was formerly dominated mainly by mining and agriculture, is now an attractive residential community with good infrastructure. Landmark features of the village are the Protestant church from 1783 with a medieval choir tower and the neo-Gothic Catholic St. James church, built between 1898 and 1900.

Breitenbach has a lively community and club life, reflected in numerous annual festivals and events. Besides the traditional Kerwe folk festival on the fourth Sunday in September, the village festival and the Christmas market are the most important dates. Breitenbach is particularly proud of its long-standing carnival tradition in the fifth season. At various grand sessions and the carnival parade on the Sunday before Rose Monday, the revelers greet all guests in the westernmost village of the Palatinate with an "Alleh hopp".

    Bergmannsbauern Museum in Breitenbach

Run by the municipal association Oberes Glantal, the Bergmannsbauern Museum is maintained by the Christian Scouts – Albert Schweitzer troop and impressively shows the life and work of the miners-farmers. The history is vividly documented, for example visitors can see a reconstructed mine tunnel. Equally important is the village life, including the typical living conditions and the everyday utensils of the miners-farmers. All this and much more can be found at the museum in Breitenbach, providing an impression of life in those times. At various events the bakehouse is also put into operation, and an authentic and functional forge has been installed in the courtyard of the Bergmannsbauern Museum.

    Protestant Church Breitenbach

The origins of the parish of Breitenbach, first mentioned in 1462, probably date back to the early Middle Ages. The choir tower of today’s Protestant parish church dates from the 13th or 14th century. The sound arcades in the upper tower floor show late Romanesque forms. Later alterations include the two windows in the tower’s ground floor and the sacrament house as well as the lavabo with Gothic forms. Between 1783 and 1787, the nave was rebuilt following a 1776 design by the Palatinate-Zweibrücken master builder Friedrich Gerhard Wahl. The pulpit and gallery date from that time. Roman inscription stones are embedded in the base and south wall of the tower. More Roman stones were found in 1833 when the old churchyard was vacated. From 1697 until the construction of the Catholic church in 1900, Catholics shared use of the Protestant church.

    Catholic Church St. James Breitenbach

Since 1697 the Catholic parish has existed again in Breitenbach. In 1687 Catholics were granted joint usage rights (Simultaneum) of the Reformed parish church. In 1877 the Catholic church administration decided to build their own church. In 1890 planning was commissioned and a year later the Simultaneum at the old Breitenbach parish church was ended. The foundation stone for the new church was laid on 31 July 1898. Many parishioners helped with the building work by manual labor and draft animals. On 10 September 1900, Bishop Josef Georg von Ehrler from Speyer consecrated the church.

The large neo-Gothic hall church with a slim tower was built with local sandstone according to plans by Wilhelm Schulte I above the village. The tower rises at the corner between the transept and choir as a defining landmark in the sightline of Kirchenstraße.
