The Bread Path owes its origin to a capital foundation by the citizens Peter Schönau, Anton Hennes, and Gertrud Schneider from 1835. In 1866, Edmund Thelen joined the foundation. It was established as the so-called Gertruden or Poor Foundation. In 1893, Pastor Isenkrahe contributed three hundred marks; the interest income was to strengthen the poor foundation.
On the fourth Sunday of Lent - Laetare - bread was distributed after High Mass. According to the Gospel of the miraculous multiplication of bread, this Sunday was also called Bread Sunday. The altar servers handed out a loaf of bread to every visitor of the founders' Mass - purportedly several hundred pieces each time! One can imagine that this Mass was always well attended. Many visitors also came from the surrounding villages - especially from Neukirchen-Sürst. The path these Mass attendees took was therefore called the Bread Path.
The custom described here lasted until the First World War. It ended with the introduction of ration cards (1916). The capital foundation ceased and was not revived.

The Bread Path is not primarily to be seen as an independent route hike. As a historic path, it intends – quite instructively – to convey to the hiker the hardships under which people 150 years ago walked this path to and from Mass, to be rewarded with a loaf of bread.
In the future, the Bread Path will be integrated into the network of historic paths in the Rheinbach city forest to form an attractive circular hiking route.
