North-facing on the Breitenberg | Via the Taufat to the Ostlerhütte | T3 or WT3 - 4
In this video, I take you to the Pfronten local mountain, the Breitenberg. Many paths lead up to the Breitenberg, most of which are very easy. The north-facing ascent via the Taufat is certainly the most difficult way to the Ostlerhütte and is rated T3 in summer. We did the tour now in winter under very good conditions. If you want to know whether we managed the tour as planned or had to turn back, you will find out in this video.
One small note: For such tours in winter, it is important to inform yourself about the current conditions beforehand. The avalanche report must be studied, and such tours should generally only be undertaken by experienced mountaineers.

In summer, route finding is relatively easy, although the tour is not necessarily well marked. In winter, route finding is significantly more difficult, and I would warmly recommend bringing a GPS device.
From the Breitenbergbahn parking lot, proceed a bit towards Pfronten to the Scheiberalm, i.e., to the ski lifts. At the lifts, keep to the longest of the lifts and walk along the standard lift beside the slope uphill. It continues easily to the Tiroler Stadel at 1262 meters elevation. From the Stadel, the path changes and goes through the forest on a classic mountain hiking trail (T2), partly quite steep. As you gain height, the spruce forest transitions into a dwarf pine area, which is unproblematic in summer, but can be somewhat more difficult in winter, especially after fresh snow, as the path is rather narrow. Continue through the dwarf pines up to the Taufat at approx. 1600 meters, where the path remains well recognizable with some experience in route finding. Then you leave the dwarf pines and ascend a free field until you reach rocky terrain at about 1715 meters that must be climbed. The path through the free field steepens again, going up on a 35° - 40° slope. Again, a reminder that the avalanche situation must be checked beforehand since this section is very vulnerable due to its location etc.
Once you reach the rope railing, you must now climb the last few meters uphill. Although everything is well secured, you should concentrate again. In winter, it is very likely that this section is heavily iced and the ropes buried under snow. Therefore, it would be advisable to at least carry crampons as an absolute minimum in your backpack. In advanced winter conditions, carrying crampons and an ice axe is not wrong and I would even recommend it.
A short time later, you finally reach the summit of the Breitenberg or the Ostlerhütte at 1838 meters elevation.
For the descent, the normal route is recommended. Follow the wide path downhill towards the east to the Bergstation of the Aggenstein lift. From here you can already see the next intermediate goal, the large Berghaus Allgäu, i.e., the Bergstation of the Breitenbergbahn. Simply continue following the path eastwards. Upon reaching the Berghaus, continue following signs towards Pfronten; alternatively, you can descend via the Reichenbachklamm. However, this is only conditionally recommended in winter. To return to the valley station, follow the signs towards Pfronten. An easy mountain hiking trail just below the Breitenbergbahn leads simply and finally downhill to the valley station and thus to the start or end point of the tour.
