Those seeking peace in nature will surely find it on this route. Away from the ski slopes of Klippitztörl, start the route at the parking lot of the pass road. Following the Lavanttaler Höhenweg, it goes up narrow forest trails to the summit of the Geierkogel. Above the tree line, the hiker is rewarded, provided the weather cooperates, with a fantastic panorama with great views.

    Safety information

    Recommendations of the ÖAV

    1. Healthy into the mountains: The valuable stress stimuli for the heart and circulation require health and good self-assessment. Avoid time pressure and choose the pace so that no one in your group gets out of breath. Pay attention to energy reserves for the descent.
    2. Careful planning: Maps, guidebooks, internet and experts provide information on the length of the route, altitude difference, difficulty and current conditions. Special attention should be paid to the weather report, as strong wind and poor visibility greatly increase the risk of accidents.
    3. Study the avalanche report: Inform yourself thoroughly about the current danger level (European avalanche danger scale in 5 levels) before starting the route. Pay particular attention to the information on danger spots (Where is it dangerous today?) and hazard sources (What is the main danger today?).
    4. Complete equipment: Adapt your equipment to the winter conditions and watch for a low backpack weight. For the avalanche emergency, an avalanche transceiver, shovel and probe are standard, as are a first aid kit, bivy sack and mobile phone. An airbag system increases the chances of survival.
    5. Regular drinking breaks: Fluids, energy and breaks are necessary to maintain performance and concentration. Hot, isotonic drinks are ideal thirst quenchers and heat providers. Easily digestible foods such as muesli bars, dried fruit and biscuits satisfy small hunger on the way.
    6. Weigh avalanche risk: Humans have limited ability to recognize avalanche danger. Base your decisions on strategic methods of risk assessment ("Stop or Go") and learn to recognize danger signs on the terrain.
    7. Small groups: Small groups allow mutual assistance and reduce the risk of triggering avalanches. Stay together in the group. Beware of solo hikers: even small incidents can lead to serious emergencies. Therefore, always inform trusted persons about your destination, route and return.
    8. Respect for nature: Do not leave any waste, avoid noise, do not enter reforestation areas, respect protected and restricted areas. Pay special attention to wildlife in winter! Form car pools or use public transport for the journey.

    Roadbook

From the parking lot (1651 m) follow the marked path no. Lavanttaler Höhenweg/308/08. After about 1.5 km at the first fork keep right and follow the path below the Geierkogel towards SW (path no. Wolfsberger Hütte/308A). On narrow forest trails it goes to the Litzer valleys. From here take the path back up to the Geierkogel at 1917 m. Once at the Geierkogel, you will be rewarded with a beautiful panoramic view. To the east the Koralpe, to the northeast the Ameringkogel, and to the north the Zirbitzkogel, which at 2396 m above sea level is also the highest point of the Southern Alps. Be careful descending from the summit. Since the first section is somewhat steep, steps should be chosen carefully. From the fork return on the same route to the starting point.
