The Spitzstein is located on the southwestern edge of the Chiemgau Alps between the two villages of Sachrang and Erl. Especially the ski route from Sachrang is a popular ski tour for any weather and almost every type of snow and avalanche conditions. Even with high avalanche danger, it is usually still possible to make a track here that is avalanche-safe – however, one should then have sufficient local knowledge to know the danger spots.
The best conditions can be found during and immediately after fresh snowfall. Due to its popularity, the rewarding slopes between the forest belts are usually already completely tracked after a weekend day. However, the powder snow would not last long anyway, as in this rather low altitude location, the snow on the south-facing slopes is quickly transformed by the sun.
Due to its low demands on fitness, route finding, and skiing technique, the Spitzstein is a popular mountain for beginners and leisurely ski tourers. Those who want to stretch the 700 meters of altitude gain into a full-day tour can visit the guest room or terrace of the Spitzsteinhaus or add the variant to Tristmahlnschneid.
Ascent Just before the bridge we follow the road on the right side of the stream about 100m westwards until it bends right. At the bend, we leave the road straight ahead where a narrow path follows along the stream for about 10 minutes to an open meadow. Climbing up the slope on the right we reach a pull path that becomes steeper upwards into the woods towards the west. Here it makes some switchbacks and then veers left over a ditch. Soon, the path leaves the forest again and you reach the meadows below the Steinmoosalm. Here, we keep always right at the edge of the forest and reach a spacious flat area whose northern end is marked by a row of trees. We bypass these on the right and overcome a short steep step at its flattest point to reach the dirt road leading right to the Aueralm. Now we ascend slightly left towards a clearing in the next belt of forest. At the next open slope, it goes a bit right again and soon you reach the sparsely wooded southeastern ridge. Always somewhat left
