Scharnitzsattel - Muttekopf area
Very nice ski touring terrain that requires almost no switchbacks except for the last steep slope, and there is never any danger of falling. Orientation is not a problem because the tour destination is in view from the start. Although the tour is not particularly difficult, special attention must be paid to the avalanche report regarding the catchment area of the Vorderen and Hinteren Platein.
With the support of the cable cars, it is moderately demanding in terms of fitness; if the tour is done from Hoch-Imst via the original route, it will be about 1450 m elevation gain, and the strain increases accordingly.
Author’s recommendation
In very safe conditions, instead of ascending the southern slope to the Scharnitzsattel, you can also ascend the WSW cirque towards the ridge to Muttekopf. This area usually has good powder snow, but one must especially watch out for wind slabs in this cirque.
The Untermarkteralm is an excellent accommodation option for a week of tours in this area.

Untermarkter AlmSafety information
The descent is done in midwinter on the right slopes and in spring on the left slopes. Critically to assess are primarily the S-SW slopes in the area of Vorderen and Hinteren Platein. In any case, it is particularly important to finish this tour by noon in spring in warm weather conditions.Roadbook
Take the Hoch-Imst cable cars from Sonneck to the middle station, then a short descent to the Malchbach drag lift and start at the mountain station. First, follow the groomed path towards the Latschenhütte, but do not cross the Malchbach; instead ascend northwest towards the Muttekopfhütte over moderately steep terrain. Looking north, the actual destination, the Scharnitzsattel, quickly becomes visible. After crossing the Malchbach, you can track towards it over beautiful tour terrain. It steepens briefly next to the Guggerköpfe, then continues moderately until the steep final slope awaits at the end. This section requires mastering the switchback technique, although there is never any danger of falling.
The optimal descent often depends on the season. In midwinter, you descend on the right side of the valley, and in spring rather on the left towards the Latschenhütte.
The Latschenhütte guarantees a rustic and cozy end to this ski tour. From here, take the groomed slope to the middle station of the cable cars and then via the slope back to Hoch Imst.
