Round route in the Tegernsee hinterland: The circumnavigation of the Plankenstein is not without reason a classic ski route.
The Plankenstein (1768 m) is a wildly jagged rock formation. Characterized by the quirky Plankenstein needle, its profile appears especially characteristic when viewed from the east or west. Its summit is reserved for climbers, who find rewarding goals on the steep slab walls all around.
The circumnavigation of the mountain on skis has meanwhile become a classic, to which not only the scenic landscape contributes. In winter, the entire valley basin behind the Wallberg and Setzberg has long been a cherished spot for local ski tourers to find sparkling powder snow crystals. In northwesterly stau weather conditions, the Tegernsee valley channels the incoming clouds and directs them exactly onto this fortress rising 1000 meters high, where they are squeezed like a lemon. On the lee side of the ridge, around the Plankenstein, the flakes can then settle without strong wind influence. This route is therefore ideal in midwinter as soon as the avalanche situation allows for new snow.
Skiers will find it rewarding especially if they have the stamina to attach one or another variant to the described route in the diverse ski terrain.

From the bus stop, a few meters towards Sutten over the bridge, then right on the forest road uphill for 20 minutes to the junction (1084 m) before the Siebli service hut. Here turn left and continue uphill across the meadows of the Sieblialm and through the following forest further to the Riedereckalm (1470 m). Still briefly westward into the Riederecksattel (1534 m) with a view of the Plankenstein. From the saddle, descend about 60 meters in altitude westwards to the Riederecksee and then climb through the cirque under the south walls of the Plankenstein to the Plankensteinsattel (1692 m). The descent now leads beyond the saddle towards the Röthensteiner See. Before the lowest point of the hollow, cross right, descend to the Röthensteinalm, and on the following forest road via the Rottachalm back to the starting point.
