The Hochgasser is a classic of the eastern Venediger group and offers a dreamlike descent!

The ascent to the Hochgasser is technically quite simple but requires good fitness due to the 1300 meters of ascent. From the summit, you can see the Großglockner 15 km away, as well as the Muntanitz group, the Großvenediger group, and the Kitzbühel Alps. It thus offers a perfect 360° view. In bad weather, the summit is not recommended because the upper part is exposed and a safe track setting is only possible with good visibility.

    Author’s recommendation

After the route, a visit to the Matreier Tauernhaus is worthwhile.

    Roadbook

We start at the toll station of the Felbertauernstraße and ascend along a forest road. After a light forest (30 min) we reach open terrain. Passing the Grünsee hut, we climb to the Schwarzer See, then continue north crossing below the Messeling to the Grauer See. Here the ascent is a bit steeper through the long slope to the summit. The summit slope offers several descent options.
