A Perfect Firn Tour with an Overnight Stay in a Winter Shelter

Although the Taschachhaus is not staffed during the winter, a comparatively luxurious winter shelter is available. It is excellently equipped and rarely fully occupied, even during peak season. In addition, the hut owner checks in from time to time and even restocks the beverage supplies. However, for those who aren’t deterred by the lack of a staffed hut, this offers the advantage of having a large and diverse touring area mostly to themselves.
In this touring area, the Bliggspitze is certainly one of the most rewarding ascents when snow conditions are favorable. Thanks to the perfectly sloped southeast-facing slopes, you’ll often find ideal conditions from top to bottom—provided you set off early enough. Since the lowest 300 meters of elevation gain run along the valley floor, which is more exposed to the north, this section is generally still stable enough later in the day to prevent breaking through.
The ascent crosses a small glacier only in its uppermost section, though the risk of crevasses is very low. Therefore, the tour is usually completed without glacier gear. However, crampons are often necessary for the final ascent to the summit through the steep, west-facing gully. An alternative route leads over the crevassed Mittlerer Eiskastenferner and the steep north face to the summit; however, this route is very rarely taken.

Access to the HutFrom the parking lot, walk a few meters west to an alpine road. Follow this road southward uphill to the Taschachalm. From the alpine pasture, head slightly downhill to a bridge over the Taschachbach and, on the left side of the stream (usually a snowmobile track), continue on fairly flat terrain into the valley until you reach the material cable car from the Taschachhaus. Here, turn right and head up a slope behind the lateral moraine, then ascend the western slope of the moraine to the Taschachhaus. The winter lodge is the first building, located slightly ahead.AscentFrom the Taschachhaus, head slightly downhill toward the west to the Sexegertenbach. To the right of the stream, keep heading valleyward and climb up a ramp to the right-hand lateral moraine. Follow this westward to a large plateau. Now turn right into the wide cirque and ascend while staying mostly on the right side; the final section is briefly quite steep and may be snow-covered, leading to the
