The actual start of the ski tour is the valley station of the Bernadein surface lift. You can reach it either after taking the Osterfelderbahn up or the complete ascent over the ski slope via Kreuzeck. The further ascent initially leads through varied ski terrain up to below the summit slope, then over an exposed ridge to the highest point. The highlight of the descent is the steep east slope, which however requires good conditions.

    Author’s recommendation

A shortcut is possible by ascending via the Schöngänge. This is a short and very steep section that leads directly above the mountain station of the Bernadein lift into the Oberkar and saves about 300 vertical meters. Often crampons are needed for this.

    Safety information

The summit flank requires absolutely secure snow conditions. Due to the east-facing exposure, the snow here becomes soft very early – in spring, the start of the cable car operations is often too late for this tour. It is therefore recommended to ascend very early from the valley or stay overnight in the Kreuzeckhaus.

    Roadbook

    Ascent:

The valley station of the Bernadein surface lift can be reached as follows:

    1. By taking the Osterfelderbahn up. From the mountain station, ski down southeast on the slope to the flat area in front of the surface lift's mountain station. Here you can ski down immediately to the right through the steep, shady cirque to the valley station – under uncertain conditions, follow the piste there.
    2. Ascent from the valley. Along the Olympic descent on the signposted ski tour route to the Trögl hut and through the ski tour tunnel further over the winter hiking trail to the Kreuzeckhaus. The ski tour route then leads along the connecting ridge with gentle ups and downs to the Hochalm and soon to the mountain station of the Bernadein surface lift. Then ski down eastwards over the slope to its valley station.

About 50 m above the lift station, the summer path begins, which you follow eastwards flat into the forest for a few minutes until you reach the signpost marked "Alpspitze." Here, turn right and ascend through open forest over the ridge above the Bernadein walls to the hollow of the Stuibensee. Passing on the right, you reach a plateau via a short steeper slope that leads to the Oberkar. Ascending to the left, you reach the start of the ridge that borders the broad eastern flank on the left. Ski as high as possible and then pack your skis on your backpack. The narrow, partly rocky ridge then leads over about 200 vertical meters with some easy climbing sections up to the final slope. This can be skied again to the summit cross.

    Descent:

If the avalanche situation and snow conditions on the east slope are suitable, descend through the middle of the summit flank to the steep drop. Here, you often need to search for your line depending on snow conditions – the optimal route can usually be well seen from the ascent on the ridge. Then follow the ascent line back to the Bernadein lift and take it back into the ski area (or alternatively 300 m of skinning uphill). Via the valley descent, continue down to the parking lot.

Standard ski touring equipment. Crampons can be comfortable in exceptional cases on the summit ridge – but they are usually not necessary.
