Set out for experiences along the Eurovelo 6 cycling route from the Číčov dead arm to Štúrovo.
If you love and seek out long-distance and international asphalt routes, EUROVELO 6 is just for you. EUROVELO 6 is an international long-distance cycle tourist route connecting the Atlantic Ocean with the Black Sea. Its total length is 4,500 kilometers. The Slovak section starts at the Bratislava border crossing Berg and ends at the Hungarian border in the town of Štúrovo. The total length of the section in Slovakia is approximately 160 kilometers, with about 87 kilometers in the Nitra region.
The starting point of today’s cycling is at the Číčov dead arm, where EUROVELO 6 seamlessly crosses from the Trnava self-governing region into our own Nitra region. If you started the route in Bratislava or Trnava regions, stop in the village of Číčov to refresh and replenish your needed energy for the next kilometers. The food here is excellent, and the place is very "bike friendly." It is also an excellent tip for accommodation if you plan to cover a long stretch of this international route.
The beginning of our route is very scenic because the Číčov dead arm represents a remnant of the Danube’s dead arm with the presence of rare aquatic birds and vegetation and the rare glacial relict northern vole. The entire area has been protected at level 5 since 1964.
Our next kilometers lead through beautiful sections along the embankment between the Danube floodplain forests, which gradually bring us to the village of Veľké Kosihy, where cyclists can enjoy 360-degree views from the lookout tower. However, an even more fascinating stop just a little past Veľké Kosihy village is the Veľký Lél island, near which you will find a campsite. The campsite offers accommodation and a buffet as well as many services such as bird watching, horse riding, water hiking and many others. If you plan to spend the night in this area, the Ecofarm is the ideal place. Opposite the campsite across the cycle path is the 3 km long Veľkolélsky island, which is definitely worth visiting. You can explore the beauties of the island on two circuits (the steppe cattle circuit, beaver circuit) and on the channel route, which will lead you to an impressive beach by the Danube, where you will thoroughly enjoy the charm of our great river. A rescue station for injured animals and a colony of ground squirrels where visitors can watch a family of endangered meadow ground squirrels operate directly in the island area.
With many enriching experiences, we continue to the town of Komárno, where we must not miss the famous Europe Courtyard with typical architecture for the individual countries of the old continent. If your bike breaks down during the trip, you will find a bike repair service on Meštianska street. For lovers of historic buildings, we recommend visiting Komárno Fortress, where you should definitely arrange a guided tour of the buildings. It is a great experience!
In the town of Komárno, we pass by the confluence of our two largest rivers, the Danube and Váh. It is a pleasing place to the eye where it is worth stopping for a moment and looking around. We cross the Váh river by bridge and again let ourselves be guided by the cycle path for the next kilometers. Before the village of Iža, we pass the UNESCO site of the former Roman military camp - Roman castellum Iža, which was built in the 2nd century during the reign of Marcus Aurelius. The next kilometers along the embankment offer many interesting places, one of which is the southernmost point of the Slovak Republic near the village of Patince. We can’t forget the wellness in Patince, after a demanding bike ride, wellness relaxation or a sightseeing boat trip that you can arrange here might be useful. In the village of Patince you will also find beautiful poppy fields and regional producers of poppy products. Did you know that white poppy also exists?
We continue further and pass the Žitava peace memorial, which reminds us of the signing of the peace treaty between the Ottoman Empire and the Habsburg monarchy.
In the village of Radvaň nad Dunajom, we refresh ourselves very tastefully and full of energy, we cycle immediately next to the Danube river with beautiful views of our great river and Hungary.
Gradually, in the distance, we spot Kravany nad Dunajom, where we can’t miss visiting the lookout tower which offers fascinating views of the tourist-popular Hungarian mountain range Gerecse. Right next to the lookout tower, you will also find a place with a municipal cycle buffet - fully equipped including charging electric bikes. In the buffet, ask about saddle covers and order excellent coffee. A few meters beside the buffet is a modern interactive information center. Here you will find a relaxation room and an interactive wall that entertains families with children. If you love adrenaline, ask also about a double bass boat ride on the Danube.
If history fascinates you, on the way further you can admire the manors of the Láng and Sarvaš families near the lookout tower on the Danube bank. We leave the village of Kravany nad Dunajom, pass the interesting historical site of the Slavic fort Mužla-Čenkov, and gradually approach the village of Obid where the EUROVELO direction changes. We turn north and later northeast.
Before we know it, we are gradually entering the town of Štúrovo, which is the end point of EUROVELO 6 in the territory of the Slovak Republic. In the town of Štúrovo, cyclists and tourists can visit many interesting places such as the amusement park Vadašland, the historic Mária Valéria Bridge and a photogenic bench, from which you have a very nice photogenic view of the basilica in the Hungarian town of Esztergom.
Author’s recommendation
We gladly recommend to cyclists a very interesting place where the river Hron flows into the Danube. The place is located just beyond the town of Štúrovo. If you still have some energy left, in Štúrovo you can connect to the Pohronská cycling highway (Štúrovo - Tlmače), which will take you through another significant area of the Slovak Republic - Tekov.
