Via Mater Dei
The route begins at the Shrine of Santa Maria della Vita, in the heart of Bologna, and climbs along the Portico di San Luca—the world’s longest covered portico—to the Shrine of the Madonna di San Luca, a symbol of the city. From here, the route crosses the hills of the Bologna area, winding through vineyards, woods, and ancient farmhouses, to reach the Val di Zena and the Sanctuary of the Madonna del Monte delle Formiche, also known for the unique natural phenomenon of winged ants that attracts numerous visitors every September.
Continuing toward the Apennines, the route passesthe archaeological site of Monte Bibele, runs alongside Lake Castel dell’Alpi, and crosses into Tuscany for a short stretch until reaching the Sanctuary of Boccadirio, before re-entering Emilia-Romagna and reaching the shrines of Ripoli and Montovolo, among the region’s oldest sites of Marian worship.
The final leg leads to Riola di Vergato, where the pilgrimage route concludes at the Church of Santa Maria Assunta, designed by Alvar Aalto: the only work created in Italy by the great Finnish architect, considered one of the masterpieces of contemporary architecture.
The route unfolds in several stages along CAI trails, marked both with the traditional red-and-white trail markers and with signage dedicated to the Via Mater Dei. It is recommended from April through October. Pilgrims can request a pilgrim’s passport, collect stamps at the shrines, and receive the final certificate. Along the route, there are parishes, farm stays, and lodging facilities offering hospitality.
As it crosses the Bolognese Apennines, the Via Mater Dei shares some sections with the Via del Fantini and connects to the Via degli Dei and the Via Della Lana e Della Seta, helping to create a network of trails that unites spirituality, nature, and culture.
The Via Mater Dei is part of the Emilia-Romagna Pilgrimage Routes and Trails network.
