Via Mariae represents a spiritual tourist route that crosses Europe in multiple directions, symbolically uniting communities that venerate the figure of the Virgin Mary. Through Romania pass two long Via Mariae routes, from which several shorter alternative routes have branched off.
The current route brings together several such Via Mariae routes, among them M01, M05, or M24. The routes are recognized by the distinctive sign - a stylized M, plus a number and a different color for each of these routes. M01, for example, is red. M05 is purple.
Although most of the communities through which this pilgrimage route passes are reformed, the path is not addressed to any specific religious denomination. The Virgin Mary remains a central figure in any confession, after all. The purpose of the route is to "reconcile" all these communities in thought and spiritual experience.
Similar to the famous Camino de Santiago pilgrimage route, pilgrims on Via Mariae can be hosted in places specially arranged for them.
Although Via Mariae does not intend for the traveler to discover the natural beauties of the traversed areas, as Via Transilvanica does, these still come packaged with the main cultural offering. In this sense, the route crosses two Romanian ethnographic regions with unique particularities: Țara Călatei and Ținutul Secuiesc.
