Via Francigena: St. Maurice - Martigny
This stage in the canton of Valais takes us through the Rhône valley up to Martigny at the Rhône knee. This section is somewhat sparing in sights, giving us more time to let our thoughts run free while hiking. We walk on the right valley side at the foot of the mountains and pass a waterfall behind Miéville, which is fed by a power plant and has the descriptive name “Pissevache.” This waterfall is naturally particularly impressive when the power plant is currently generating electricity.
At the entrance to Martigny, we walk past the “Château de Bâtiaz,” which shapes the town’s image, and then cross the Rhône tributary “La Dranse,” which will be our companion on the connecting stage.
