Rorschach branch: Rorschach - Herisau
The section Rorschach - Herisau is part of the Rorschach branch, which leads us from Rorschach to Einsiedeln. We are on the Swiss Way of St. James.
Today's challenging day stage takes us over a distance of 25.2 km with a walking time of around 7.0 hours from Rorschach to Herisau. We start the hike at the harbor of Rorschach and follow the signposted paths. After a short ascent, we reach Sulzberg Castle after 3.0 km. After another 4.0 km, we have crossed the districts Vorderhof, Mittelhof, and Hinterhof of Untereggen and reach the Goldach gorge. The path runs over both asphalt and natural trails. We cross the Goldach over the Martins bridge and climb up on the other side of the gorge to Neudorf on the outskirts of St. Gallen. After about 15.0 km, we arrive in the Old Town of St. Gallen. We leave St. Gallen heading west and after another 5.0 km cross the Sitter on Kräzern street. Passing by Lake Gübsensee, we reach the "old customs" at 798 m above sea level in Herisau, thus the highest point of the day stage.
Today we pass the following sights: Jakobs fountain Rorschach (not directly on the way), Sulzberg Castle, Martins bridge, St. Gallen Cathedral, St. Laurentius Church Herisau.
It is possible to stay overnight at the pilgrim hostel in St. Gallen.
