The entire route from Persenbeug-Gottsdorf to Marbach on the Danube is quite flat and from the bridge mostly runs directly along the left bank of the Danube. Then follows an ascent of about 200 meters in altitude up to the town of Maria Taferl with the eponymous pilgrimage church. The history of the church begins with the first documented mention in 1659 of a chapel at Maria Taferl. In 1660, the conversion into a pilgrimage church began, which was consecrated in 1724. Finally, in 1947, it was designated a basilica by Pope Pius XII.
Here above we have reached the highest point of today's stage and have a beautiful view of Marbach and the Danube. But it is not simply downhill to the stage destination Leibern, rather a series of further ascents and descents follow in hilly terrain. It is a beautiful stage, which we may quietly toast to in the evening.
Note(s)
The «Jerusalem Way / JERUSALEM WAY» is a network of pilgrimage routes that leads pilgrims from Central Europe to Jerusalem. Jerusalem, together with Rome and Santiago de Compostela, is one of the three most important Christian pilgrimage destinations of the Middle Ages. This route begins at Cape Finisterre on Europe's west coast and leads either through Italy or along the Danube through the Balkans to Turkey, and from there again on a common route to Jerusalem.
