With this stage, we start for the last time in the Rioja region, as soon after leaving Logroño we enter the Navarra region - we switch from one well-known wine-growing region to another. Navarra also thrives on the cultivation of grain and grapes. Today, too, we will make good progress on long, straight paths through gently hilly terrain.
Viana is the first town on our route in Navarra and bears the historic title «Muy Noble y Leal Ciudad de Viana Cabeza del Principado de Navarra» (very noble and loyal city of Viana, head of the Principality of Navarra...).
In Torres del Rio, we encounter the Iglesia del Santo Sepulcro with an octagonal ground plan. Immediately after follows Sansol, whose name is a simplification of the name of the martyr San Zoilo from Cordoba. The monastery San Zoilo de Carrión de los Condes (which we passed a few days ago) once had a “collection office” in Sansol.
The most important sight in the stage town Los Arcos is the parish church Santa María, based on a Romanesque church from the 12th century.
Note(s)
The “Jerusalem Way / JERUSALEM WAY” is a pilgrimage network that leads pilgrims from Central Europe to Jerusalem. Jerusalem, together with Rome and Santiago de Compostela, is one of the 3 most important Christian pilgrimage destinations of the Middle Ages. This route begins at Cape Finisterra on the west coast of Europe and leads either through Italy or along the Danube through the Balkans into Turkey, and from there on a common route to Jerusalem.
