After the cape León with its attraction for tourists, it now becomes quite calm again for some stages. Even today, we hike on a flat stage again near main roads, but this time mostly southeastwards. We are now in the Meseta.
The Meseta (derived from the Spanish la mesa/ the table) is the name given to the more than 200,000 km² large Castilian plateau located in the center of the Iberian Peninsula in Spain, a part of which we will get to know today. As the name suggests, the area is quite flat despite some smaller hills. The challenge lies not in the profile, but in the fact that this area is practically treeless and thus without shade, so pilgrims can be mercilessly roasted by the sun. To reinforce this impression, there is practically no water here. However, the Meseta is also one of Spain's granaries until the fields are harvested in summer. In the Meseta, it is advisable to have enough supplies and especially water with you.
In the stage town of Reliegos, three Roman long-distance roads converged. This former "traffic hub" is still a suitable place to rest today.
Note(s)
The "Jerusalem Way / JERUSALEM WAY" is a pilgrimage network that leads pilgrims from Central Europe to Jerusalem. Jerusalem, together with Rome and Santiago de Compostela, is one of the 3 most important Christian pilgrimage destinations of the Middle Ages. This route starts at Cape Finisterra on Europe's western shore and leads either through Italy or along the Danube through the Balkans to Turkey, and from there again on a common route to Jerusalem.
