We begin our hike at the locks of the Canal de Castilla, a canal used for irrigation. While here we still see many stone blocks and lock gates, the next kilometers are characterized by reeds, ducks, and other water birds, a refreshing change from the often unavoidable routes along roads.
In Boadilla Del Camino near the church stands a "Gothic court column" decorated with scallop shells, which served as a pillory in the Middle Ages.
The stage location Castrojeriz is not visible from the west during the approach, as it lies on the eastern flank of a ridge. However, from there we have a wide view over the first kilometers of the next stage. Castrojeriz is known for its ruins from the Gothic period on the black table mountain. The church Nuestra Señora del Manzano is a national monument and houses the famous Madonna statue from the 13th century, "Santa Maria d'Almacan".
Note(s)
The "Jerusalem Way / JERUSALEM WAY" is a pilgrimage network that leads pilgrims from Central Europe to Jerusalem. Jerusalem, along with Rome and Santiago de Compostela, is among the three most important Christian pilgrimage destinations of the Middle Ages. This path begins at Cape Finisterre on Europe's west coast and leads either through Italy or along the Danube through the Balkans into Turkey, and from there again on a common route to Jerusalem.
