At our starting point Aroue-Ithorots-Olhaïby, reaching an agreement seems to have been difficult, presumably due to the merger of 3 municipalities, none of which wanted to give up their name. We start at the town hall of this merged municipality, but if there is no consensus on which town hall is the correct one, the place is also referred to as "the roundabout D11/D115".
At Lichos, we cross the river "Le Saison", which formally marks our departure from the Basque Country (Euskadi). Communication in French should now become easier again - but until Jerusalem, we will still have to overcome a number of linguistic hurdles.
Before arriving at the stage town Navarrenx, we cross an old stone bridge (13th century), from where we should enjoy a beautiful view of the Gave d'Oloron water.
Navarrenx was expanded by the kings of Navarre into a large fortress, which proved its worth during the Huguenot wars, when the French unsuccessfully besieged the town for a long time. The fortifications are still well preserved and offer ample material for a thorough visit, and the Saint-Germain church is also worth visiting.
Note(s)
The "Jerusalemway / JERUSALEM WAY" is a network of pilgrimage routes that leads pilgrims from Central Europe to Jerusalem. Jerusalem, together with Rome and Santiago de Compostela, is one of the 3 most important Christian pilgrimage destinations of the Middle Ages. This route starts at Cape Finisterre on the west coast of Europe and leads either through Italy or along the Danube through the Balkans to Turkey, and from there again on a common route to Jerusalem.
