Today our path leads us from the impressive "fortified church" Arbing via Baumgartenberg, Clam Castle with the beautiful Klamschlucht gorge, and the town of Klam to Grein on the Danube. First, we go down the short Kirchenberg hill, then briefly left before turning right onto a forest path. We get a beautiful view of the Machland and then reach the villages of Frühstorf and Puchberg, where we keep left at the edge of town to then sharply turn right onto a field path at a wayside shrine. The path then leads over fields and through a small forest area until we reach the first houses of the Baumgartenberg community. After that, we continue for a while near the B3 on a narrow asphalt road until finally turning left towards Klam, but after about 100 meters, we immediately turn right again to reach the village of Au via a field path. There, we turn left into the so-called Klamschlucht gorge leading to Clam Castle. A wonderful stage lies ahead until we finally reach the old castle ruins high above, where international concerts in the summer attract tens of thousands of visitors from the German-speaking area. If we are lucky, we can not only possibly listen to a concert from afar but also stop by the castle tavern. Afterwards, we reach the town of Klam, pass by the church, and turn right at the edge of town to cross the gentle hills of the Machland and reach the old town of Grein. The day's goal is the town square with the fountain. Worth mentioning is the Schörgi confectionery, where you can indulge in sweets with a beautiful view of the Danube.
Note: If you still have energy, you may be able to take the ferry over the Danube and tackle the first part of the upcoming stage, i.e., uphill to Nadlingerhof. For an overnight stay at Nadlingerhof, call ahead—see info for the next stage.
