Jakobsweg Carinthia, 7th stage: Villach - St. Jakob ob Ferndorf
7th day stage:
Villach - St. Jakob ob Ferndorf
Length: 27.2 km
Walking time: 7 hours
ATTENTION:
We would like to inform you that the Drau bridge in Feistritz/Drau is closed this year to all traffic as well as to pedestrians. Therefore, the Gasrücken path from the Drau bridge to Fresach is also not passable. Pilgrims coming from Villach on the Jakob path should take the route variant via Gummern, Kellerberg, Weißenstein, and Tscheuritsch to Fresach. See Jakobsweg Carinthia description, variant of the 7th stage.
The day stage is mostly flat, only from Feistritz in the Drau valley does it go slightly uphill. It should be noted that you are exposed to all weather conditions during this stage, whether sun or rain, as you are mostly in open terrain.
At the destination St. Jakob ob Ferndorf, there are currently no overnight accommodations, so you should arrange lodging in advance. Suitable accommodations can be reached within minutes by GoMobil (Tel.: +43 (0)664/603 603 9702 or +43 (0)664/603 603 9712) or Rudi (Tel.: +43 (0)4245/62929).

Roadbook
From the Jakob church in Villach, you go across the main square to the Drau river, cross it to the north, then keep left and follow it upstream along the Drau cycle path to the Rennstein power plant and further to Gummern (Villach - Gummern: about 9.7 km). Here you cross the Drau bridge westwards and walk via Töplitsch and Untergraben to Kellerberg (Gummern - Kellerberg: about 5.3 km). While one route variant branches off here towards Weißenstein, the main pilgrim route continues along the same side of the Drau, following it via Feffernitz and Pobersach until Feistritz a. d. Drau (Kellerberg - Feistritz a. d. Drau: 5.8 km). Here you turn into Bahnhofstraße and cross the river again. Directly after the bridge’s left curve, follow a path in the forest uphill along the stream. After about 10 minutes, keep left at a fork and reach the Fresach state road via the farm vulgo Schlafer. Then keep left again and after about 250 m, follow the road to the right. Another 300 m later, turn left into a narrow street towards Ferndorf/Sonnwiesen. Passing the farm vulgo Jaklbauer, you reach the next intersection after about 1 km. After the Laas West village sign, be careful as you change from the road to a barely visible meadow path running along a fence into the forest. After the end of the fence, turn right and follow the signpost St. Jakob/Höhensteig, walking along the ridge to finally reach an asphalt road again via a forest road. Turn right there and go uphill for 800 m to the destination of the day stage, the branch church St. Jakob ob Ferndorf (Feistritz a. d. Drau - St. Jakob ob Ferndorf: about 6.3 km).
