The Ingegerd Route invites you not only to a walk through the landscape but also through time. When Ingegerd was born around the year 1000, Christianity was entering, and Sweden was on its way into the Middle Ages. Five hundred years later, Albertus Pictor dies, who left marks in many churches along the route. He belongs to the last generation who, halfway between Ingegerd's time and our own, lived their entire lives in the Middle Ages. Many of the churches along the route, such as Storkyrkan in Stockholm, Mariakyrkan in Sigtuna, and Uppsala Cathedral are also from this period.
Making a pilgrimage can be about following in the footsteps of previous generations, but it can also be other things that give the walk meaning: the place where you rested or shared a meal with someone, the meeting with the town with all its people and impressions, or the quiet peace under the trees. It can also be the walk itself, the silence, or the shared conversation with a fellow walker.
Whoever you are, you are welcome to receive the spiritual nourishment that holy places offer. Perhaps you see the walk mostly as a historical cultural walk, yet you can be touched on a human, existential level by your walk. Sometimes we only discover in hindsight how a walk affects us. You can walk in a group or alone, slowly or quickly, in silence or in good conversations with fellow walkers. Welcome to walk the Ingegerd Route.
