Zirmgrat - panoramic tour over the Vils
Author’s recommendation
In 1883, King Ludwig II decided to build a castle on Falkenstein that would be even more impressive than Neuschwanstein. However, money soon became scarce, the plans became increasingly modest and the king's death put an end to the project.

Some almost pathless and steep sections of the route require good orientation skills and appropriate caution.Roadbook
The path continues in a westerly direction a little north of the ridge section through the forest. If you pay close attention, you can discover a short footpath on the left-hand side that climbs up to the ridge. Once at the top, continue to the right and continue tightly, almost without a path, to the 1280 m high Einerkopf.
If you dare to descend steeply in the rocky forest, you can follow the only vaguely recognisable footprints west of the summit to the hiking trail and follow it in a longer descent to the road, which you follow largely flat to the Berghotel Falkenstein. From the hotel, a stairway climbs up to the ruins of Falkenstein Castle.
Once you have descended from the ruins, continue along the narrow and fairly steep southern descent. Next to a rock face, it drops down to the impressive Mariengrotte grotto and turns to the right until it leads far out to the west and reaches the Vilstal valley near Pfronten-Steinach railway station. You can take the railway back from there or walk back to the starting point on the Ostallgäu-Tirol circular hiking trail alongside the Vils.
