Starting point: Pfronten-Steinach hiking car park
The hike begins at the hiking car park in Pfronten-Steinach. From here, follow hiking paths to just below the Tiroler Stadle (unattended). Then the path pleasantly ascends over wide forest roads that wind through dense forest. After about an hour, you reach the tree line where the forest clears and first panoramic views of the Pfronten valley and surrounding mountains open up.
Ascent via hiking trails and forest roads
Continue over easily walkable paths that moderately wind up the slope. The route is varied, and the wide path design makes it comfortable even for less experienced hikers. You pass smaller mountain meadows and sparse forests, and repeatedly have free views of the beautiful Allgäu mountain world. The path continues uphill and becomes steeper but remains easily walkable up to the ridge path.
Ridge path - demanding section
After about 3 hours of hiking, you reach the start of the ridge path, which is technically more demanding. Here, surefootedness and a head for heights are necessary because the narrow path is partly rocky and steep. Slopes drop steeply on both sides, offering spectacular views into the Pfronten valley. The path is well marked but some sections require concentration and sure walking.
The ridge extends over about 2 kilometers and leads you through high alpine terrain. It is worthwhile to pause briefly at the numerous viewpoints and enjoy the magnificent views of the surrounding peaks and valleys.
Destination: Ostler Hut
At the end of the ridge path, after another half hour, you reach the Ostler Hut, perched at 1,838 m elevation. The hut offers an ideal opportunity to refresh yourself and enjoy the impressive view of the Pfronten valley and Tannheim mountains. Here you can comfortably stop and fortify yourself with regional specialties for the next part of the journey.
The descent can be done in two ways:
Shortening via the Breitenberg cable car: If you want to shorten the return journey, you can descend from the Ostler Hut to the Breitenberg cable car mountain station (about 15 minutes walking time). From there, the cable car conveniently takes you down to the valley at Pfronten-Steinach.
Hiking back to the valley: Those who want to hike back on foot follow the signposted route over hiking trails back down to Pfronten-Steinach. The descent takes about 2 hours and leads over forest roads and partly rocky paths back to the starting point of the hike.
Conclusion:
The hike to the Breitenberg over the ridge path offers impressively scenic sections and demanding passages. Especially the ridge path requires surefootedness and is rewarded with grand views. The option to shorten the return route with the Breitenberg cable car also makes the tour pleasant for hikers who prefer a relaxed return after the ascent.
