Drive/walk up from Ums to the start of path no. 3. There are several parking options there. Follow path no. 3 steeply through the forest to Hofer Alpl, then continue to the entry of the Schäufelesteig. It goes steeply and directly through the forest and later open up to the Schlern plateau and to the summit cross of the Petz.
Return goes to the Schlernhaus and from there via the Prügelsteig (no. 1) over the Sesselschweige back to the junction to Hoferalpl and then follow the ascent path back to the start.
