Oswald von Wolkenstein, bekannter Dichter, Sänger und Politiker des Spätmittelalters, nannte den Berg Saleren. Aus dieser Bezeichnung wurde im Laufe der Jahre unser Schlern im Seiser-Alm-Gebiet.
Der Schlern ist je nach Perspektive ein massiver Berg oder eher eine Hochfläche, deren Nutzung als Weideland bereits in frühgeschichtlicher Zeit belegt werden konnte. Er erhebt sich über der größten Hochalm Europas, der Seiser Alm und ist von dieser aus sehr leicht zugänglich.
Den höchsten Punkt bildet der Petz mit seinen 2564 Metern. Gegen Osten und Süden hingegen bricht er abrupt ab und bildet zusammen mit den beiden Felsspitzen Santner und Euringer eine beieindruckende Kulisse. Diese Silhouette wurde zum Markenzeichen Südtirols und ziert vom Käse bis zur Zeitschrift so einiges an Produkten.
Legendär wurden die bergsteigerische Unternehmung des Johann Santner. Aus Bozen kommend weilte Santner 1880 zur Sommerfrische im Schlerngebiet. Der große Schlernzacken, dies der damalige Name der Spitze, galt als absolut unbezwingbar. Santner scheint davon angespornt worden zu sein, jedenfalls ging er am 2. Juli 1880 frühmorgens los und schaffte es tatsächlich, die 2413 m hohe Spitze zu erreichen.
