The Preber is the third highest mountain in the Lungau and due to its striking shape and open position it is visible almost in the whole Lungau basin. The area around the Prebersee (1,514 m) is already in the upper mountain forest stage. Spruce and larch thrive here as the predominant trees. The latter, together with the Swiss stone pine, climbs above the timberline into the combat zone, where individual specimens marked by the harsh climate reach the tree line. Clearing and grazing have created alpine meadows in the mountain forest stage, which delight us with their rich flowering.

From the Ludlalm inn at the Prebersee lake, follow the markings on a forest road through the forest to the Preber-Halterhütte hut. At the fork 787 Mühlbachtörl-Roteck/788 Jakob-Reicher-Weg Preber you hike north along trail 788. Over the rather steep summit slope you finally reach the Roßscharte and the peak of the Preber, at 2,740m, which lies a little behind it.
The way back follows the path already known from the ascent.
