From the Allgäu main ridge, the route descends into the Lech Valley, follows along the Lech river, and climbs up into the beautiful and secluded Sulzltal to the Frederik-Simms-Hut in the Lechtal Alps.

Long hiking stage crossing the Allgäu Alps, a long descent to Holzgau, and through the broad Lech Valley into the wild world of the Lechtal Alps. Physically challenging, especially due to the different climate zones. Very hot in summer in the Lech Valley and pleasant on the mountain paths. Brooks along the way often invite you to cool off, whether in the pools of the Rossgumpen stream, on the gravel banks of the Lech, or in the Sulzbach. There are plenty of opportunities for refreshments along the route.

At the height of the village Schönau near Holzgau, the route branches off from the E5 and then follows this more individual and quieter Off E5.

    Author’s recommendation

Places to stop along the way - lower Rossgumpen Alp, cafes and restaurants in Holzgau, Sulzlalm.

The detour over Tyrol's longest pedestrian suspension bridge is not recommended due to time constraints.

A flashlight or headlamp is not necessary on the tunnel path to Sulzlalm, but it is quite amusing.

At the Simms Hut, mobile phones can be charged in the kitchen. Just hand them over there. Half-board catering is recommended, also take the packed snack for the next long stage through the Lechtal Alps. The Simms Hut is a cozy DAV hut with the two tenants Andy and Charly. Morning zither and guitar sounds as a wake-up call at 6:30 am quickly make you forget the thought of cold water. Very good breakfast buffet.

    Safety information

An early start to the Lech Valley is recommended, as in midsummer the temperature in the valley rises well above 30 °C. Considerably more pleasant at altitudes above 1500 m. Too long breaks are not recommended, as you will lose rhythm and unnecessarily extend the total walking time of about 7 hours.

    Roadbook

Immediately after the Kemptner Hut, the path rises a few meters in altitude and after half an hour reaches the Mädelejoch, crossing both the Allgäu main ridge and the border from Germany to Austria. The path then follows the long descent through the Höhenbachtal along the Rossgumpen stream past the unmanaged upper Rossgumpen Alp, the managed lower Rossgumpen Alp, and past the Simms waterfalls to Holzgau. There, keep right until the junction turning left towards the Lech and continue following the E5 sign (this is where the first indication for the Frederik-Simms Hut is noted). Follow the pleasantly cool shade of the riverbank trees along the left side of the Lech to a pedestrian bridge. A few meters later behind a bench, a narrow path follows the forest edge towards Sulzbach. Alternatively, you can go all the way to the hamlet Sulzlbach and there follow the old AV sign to the Frederik-Simms Hut. Arriving in the dark lower Sulzltal, walk directly towards the Lechtalhaus. Since the path along the rocky lower Sulzltal is not shown on all maps, follow the forest road branching sharply to the right. After a few meters, an unmarked footpath branches off into the forest, which after half an hour meets the forest road again. From there, follow the forest road through countless tunnels. Then the forest clears, and the path towards Sulzlalm opens up. Then continue for a while along the Sulzbach to the material cable car of the Frederik-Simms Hut. Past blockwork to the final ascent, also called the climb of a thousand hairpin bends, with countless switchbacks to the Frederik-Simms Hut.
