Although Schlagstein is not one of the best-known peaks of the region, it surprises with a magnificent view of the Säuling, the Bleckenau, and the Allgäu mountain world. The varied route is also suitable for sporty families with older children – provided surefootedness and a head for heights are present.

Roadbook
The clear mountain air and the idyllic mountain landscape make this circular route a real hiking treat. The starting point is the mountain inn Bleckenau, which you can reach comfortably with the Bleckenau bus from Hohenschwangau (opposite the information center).
From there, the path initially leads towards the hunter's hut. After about 30 minutes, the road rises significantly behind a water protection area. As soon as the dense high forest opens, turn right to the Altenbergalpe. Across blooming alpine meadows follow the signs "Schlagstein" – about 1.5 hours walking time from Bleckenau. The last section to the summit becomes steeper and leads through wooded, rock-strewn terrain. Surefootedness is required here.
At the top, you can expect a magnificent panoramic view over the Ammergebirge nature reserve with its wild forests, deeply incised valleys, and distinctive peaks. Especially impressive is the view to the west of the neighboring Säuling.
After an extended summit break, the descent begins. If you come across small ground depressions (so-called "Pingen") or rust-red patches of earth, you can marvel at a piece of history – iron ore was actually mined here centuries ago.
From the summit, go back to the Schlagsteinsattel. There, a path leads right to the Bächsattel. Keep half right, cross the saddle, and descend into the Rotmoos. The path then turns into a forest road, which shortly thereafter leads above Bleckenau into the Pöllattal.
For the return journey, you have two options: either hike down to the valley via the water pipeline path/Brunnstubenweg (about 1.5 hours walking time from Bleckenau) – or comfortably return to Hohenschwangau by the Bleckenau bus.
