The Cabane des Dix is a hut of the SAC Monte Rosa section and is located above the Cheilon Glacier at an altitude of 2928 m.
The hut is the ideal starting point for climbing the major mountains such as Mont Blanc de Cheilon, La Ruinette and Pigne d’Arolla, but also for La Luette as an introductory and acclimatization route.
If the Glacier de Cheilon is free of snow, crampons and ice axe may be required.
Those who want to be safe stay on the signposted hiking trail and cross the valley below the glacier tongue.
The old path, which is still marked on most maps, directly from Pas de Chevres down to the Glacier de Cheilon and further along the eastern glacier edge to the height of the hut no longer exists or is no longer passable (status August 2022!)
Roadbook
From the parking lot in Arolla, briefly follow the road uphill to the last hairpin bend. Here then follow the wide path into the forest and continue to the staffed alp Les Tsijiores Nouves. From the alp, follow the steep narrow path with many switchbacks to point 2302. From there, continue less steeply southwest until you reach the derelict alp La Remoinste. From there, continue on the narrow footpath towards Pas de Chevres until you reach point 2741 in a hollow. Here the path to Col de Riedmatten branches off and follows this to the narrow ridge. (Author's note: In August 2022, the crossing to Cabane des Dix via Pas de Chevres was still possible and not closed; due to the closure, you are now forced to go via Col du Riedmatten. This variant was last taken by the author in 2010!). Beyond the ridge, descend very steeply into the scree field of the lateral moraine of Glacier de Cheilon. Now follow the path along the upper edge of the scree field northwards until the terrain flattens a bit. From here, move off-path slightly descending southwest towards the start of the pronounced lateral moraine of the glacier. Ascend to the crest of the moraine and over it until about 2750 m where you can horizontally leave it onto the glacier. Now turn towards the middle of the glacier (warning in 2022 there was a large meltwater runoff on the glacier here!) and ascend about 70 vertical meters until you head south of a prominent scree cone off-path over the debris-covered glacier directly towards the hut. Directly at the foot of the steep slope to the hut there is a kind of trench, where shortly before reaching it you find old markings and path traces. Follow these briefly south and then climb via a narrow serpentine path into a small saddle below the hut. From there, 5 minutes to the hut.
