Feistringstein – Crossing (SG II- and KS C)
This challenging and solitary rock route offers great views of the eastern Hochschwab massif.
The crossing of the Little and Great Feistringstein takes place on a scenically spectacular ridge route, which reaches difficulty grade II- (one spot) on the ascent and in the descent passes a via ferrata of difficulty B/C, whereby the C section is to be mastered as a vertical gorge going downhill.
Several passages are somewhat exposed and a good sense of direction is necessary since the rocky ascent route is only marked with cairns and sporadic red or orange dots.
The return path runs after the via ferrata on a beautiful and easy hiking trail.

Roadbook
From the parking lot at the village entrance of Seewiesen, walk a short distance along the road downstream and then follow a yellow signpost "Hackentörl" to the left. A marked hiking trail leads uphill through the forest to a saddle, where it meets a gravel road (signpost "Hackenalm" to the left). Here follow a clearly defined path straight ahead through the high forest further uphill (unmarked). After a wildlife feeding place, you reach a multiple fork of forest roads and turn left to follow the upper forest road slightly uphill. You reach a forest road intersection and continue straight uphill. Where the grass-covered track bends left, a discreet pull path branches off to the right at a cairn, where you turn onto a ridge, where this path becomes a footpath ("Zeller Steig") and also turns left. Here you leave the path to the right and climb pathlessly through light woodland on a faintly defined ridge. At a slightly lower forest road bend, pass to the left, always uphill along the ridge. Shortly above a side ridge coming up from the right, you reach the first rock wall, where you continue to ascend on its left side. Here you find the first cairns, which climb higher in hairpin bends, often on a clear trail, becoming increasingly steep and just below the edge of the cliff. Where the cairns disappear, turn right onto the rock ridge and follow it directly beside the edge of the cliff further uphill. On trail traces and along delicate red lines, ascend later to a larch-covered saddle, on the opposite side climb up a steep gully (SG I+) back onto the rocky ridge, following small red marks and arrows. Further up, the rocky route becomes somewhat exposed and is marked with orange dots. Behind a short, quite exposed ridge section, you finally reach the base of the Little Feistringstein, which a via ferrata (difficulty C) leads directly up. However, you can also follow orange dots to the left as a bypass, first descending and then ascending again along the base of the wall. Soon an orange arrow sharply points right, where you pass a memorial cross to a saddle uphill. From there, a clear path leads right back and up to the Little Feistringstein, although a somewhat unpleasant wedged block (SG II-) has to be overcome.
From the Little Feistringstein, return down over the wedged block to the saddle and now follow clear path traces which lead right past a ridge tower. From here, orient yourself by numerous cairns indicating the further route. Initially rather right, then back onto a saddle and continue on the left side of the ridge. Later, descend a bit exposed almost vertically along a chain and on the other side climb steeply again along another chain. Over a rocky subpeak, you go to another notch and behind it along the wall base on the left, then back onto the ridge over steep scree gullies and up again on this (cairns); finally, steeply up on the left side of the widening rock ridge over several passages to the summit of the Great Feistringstein.
For the descent, follow the summit ridge west to a flat meadow below the Feistring tower, where a large cairn marks the upper entry to the via ferrata. This leads in a steep descent to a vertical gorge (difficulty C), from which you cross out left at the bottom into a notch, cross it, and on the other side climb back up to the plateau along via ferrata protections (difficulty B). From here, follow an easy hiking trail west that initially runs flat and briefly slightly uphill and after a left bend leads down to the Zlackensattel. There you meet a well-marked path, which you follow left over the Hackentörl back to Seewiesen.
