Karlhochkogel via Wallmerin and Käfereck (I+)
The Karlhochkogel is one of the rather quiet summits in the Hochschwab area and on an ascent via the Wallmerin you will hardly ever meet another person. This route is very scenic but quite steep in some sections. For the key passage, you have to use your hands a bit (grade I+).
As a reward, you will find spectacular panorama and the solitary expanse of an undulating summit plateau that stretches from Käfereck over the Mühlbachboden to Karlhochkogel and continues on the other side to the Fölzstein.
After descending through the Karlgraben, very beautiful natural rock pools at the upper end of the Karlschütt invite you for a cool refreshing swim in summer.

The steep and rocky passages in the ascent require absolute surefootedness.
The summit plateau is very spacious. In fog, orientation problems can easily occur there.
Tips and suggestions
Another exciting route with descent through the Karlgraben leads via the Ladder trail to the Fölzstein.Roadbook
About 50 m west of the parking lot, a forest road branches off to the right and runs flat through the forest. At a fork by a wayside shrine in front of a large wooden shed, take the right fork and follow the road uphill to a 90-degree left bend. Directly in the bend, a discreet meadow path branches off diagonally to the right. You cross a embankment and then a stream. On the other side, go up the steep bank and then left into the forest. The path soon becomes clearer, runs on a narrow ridge exactly between two streams and later climbs uphill in pleasantly wide hairpin bends. Further up, it becomes flatter again and the trail crosses to the right into a wide meadow channel with sparse dwarf pine and tree growth. Diagonally to the right, it then continues in the forest to the edge of very tall dwarf pines and a short stretch alongside them until a dwarf pine corridor opens horizontally to the right, which soon leads to a distinctive, small rocky ridge with a beautiful view. Here you turn left uphill and soon reach another crossing to the right through steeply cut dwarf pines, which you follow horizontally to the main ridge of the Wallmerin, where the path would continue to the right downhill. About 5 meters before this, turn left where a dwarf pine corridor leads uphill and soon directly along the ridge. A distinctive rock tower is bypassed on the left, several rocky zones as well. Further up, the path crosses to the left and runs under a prominent rock wall, then leads back over a very steep scree gully to the ridge, where it continues steeply uphill between dwarf pines. At the top, there is another short crossing to the left before going somewhat unpleasantly along the edge of the dwarf pines over steep turf and rocky outcrops up to the foot of the wall at the highest end of the ridge.
Here you turn right and follow the foot of the wall a short distance, then climb very steeply over a rocky meadow to the left to a distinctive cave. From the cave entrance, walk about 10 meters horizontally to the right (east) and then climb several meters straight up to the left over a rocky ridge, then scramble very steeply diagonally to the right under a rock wall (grade I+), until you reach a grassy ridge leading to the exit onto the plateau near the Käfereck.
Across the undulating high plateau, proceed towards the still distant Karlhochkogel, with possible different lines between the low dwarf pines and over bumps and depressions. Below the summit, keep left and finally follow a series of cairns to the right to the summit cross.
From the summit, descend eastwards on a cairn-marked ridge to a flat meadow hollow. On path traces, continue there straight ahead initially slightly uphill, then steeply down into a karst hollow, taking a clearly visible path on the other side leading to a wide rock dome. From there, descend steeply to a meadow saddle, which is reached from the left by a clearly visible path from the Fölzstein.
On the right side of the saddle, leave the path as soon as it leads uphill again and descend off-trail at the edge of the rocks over a steep meadow. Where the rocks end, it is best to keep slightly right on the further descent to reach a flat ridge leading down into a small cirque. At the lower exit of the cirque, the terrain becomes steeper and somewhat rocky again. Soon you will recognize the remains of an old path, leading diagonally to the right over a gully, then loses itself again. Here descend to the cirque floor below and cross it to meet path traces on the other side, which you follow downhill. From a widely visible hunting hut high on the right slope, a clear path leads down shortly. Here you reach the hunting path in the Karlgraben, which initially passes a water source and then goes over a rock ledge to the former Karlalm, of which only a few foundations remain.
The further descent continues on this hunting path, which is clearly defined throughout and easy not to miss, until you reach the Karlschütt at the bottom and return to the parking lot via a forest path.
