Füssen is a picturesque small town on the Lech, not far from the Austrian border. Its history dates back to Roman times. Back then, Füssen was located on the Roman road Via Claudia Augusta. The small old town centre with its many charming houses, the churches, and the town castle are worth an extensive stroll. The proximity to the royal castles and the numerous spa opportunities still attract many tourists. Not least, the surrounding very attractive landscape leaves unforgettable impressions.
On the site of today's castle was once an ancient Roman fort and then a castle. Around 1500, it was transformed into a castle-palace. Particularly worth seeing are the paintings on the facades in the inner courtyard.
The Baumgarten city park belonged to the St. Mang monastery since the 14th century. Around 1900, the area was acquired by the town of Füssen and converted into a public park. A special feature is the old water reservoir. It was built in the form of a castle with a tower and battlements. Many rows of lime trees line the paths.
The Alatsee gained renewed fame when it became the setting for a detective novel about Commissioner Kluftinger. Its special location, framed by gently wooded hills, is equally popular with hikers, bikers, and swimmers.
The location of Falkenstein castle is very exposed and therefore particularly susceptible to storms and lightning strikes. For this reason, a simple, robust multi-storey house with a gable roof was decided upon. In 1884, King Ludwig II acquired the site and wanted to have a robber baron's castle built there. However, his bold ideas did not go beyond the planning stage. The original model can now be viewed at Neuschwanstein Castle. Further information can also be found in a small museum room at the castle hotel.
The Mariengrotto below the Falkenstein castle ruin is dedicated to the veneration of Our Lady of Lourdes.
