Der tiefgrüne, von dichten Wäldern umgebene See ist ein gemütlicher, stiller Ort. Der Alatsee ist jedoch auch unter dem Namen „Blutender See” bekannt, denn in etwa 15 m Tiefe liegt eine rötliche Schicht, die von Schwefelbakterien gebildet wird, die für gewöhnliche Lebewesen tödlich ist. Tauchen ist daher im Alatsee strengstens verboten. Oberhalb dieser Schicht ist der Alatsee sauerstoffreich und Leben kann gedeihen.
Vielleicht ist es die Färbung oder seine Geschichte, die den Alatsee zu einem geheimnisumwobenen Ort macht. Während des Zweiten Weltkrieges haben Luftwaffentechniker mit Unterwassermodellen der Focke-Wulf Ta 154, einem zweimotorigen Nachtjagdflugzeug, Versuche zur Aerodynamik durchgeführt. Die riesigen Eisenstangen, die zur Durchführung der Versuche benötigt wurden, sind heute noch sichtbar. Hartnäckig hält sich auch das Gerücht, dass gegen Ende des Zweiten Weltkrieges Goldschätze der Deutschen Reichsbank im See versenkt wurden. Dafür existiert bis heute kein Nachweis. Sicher ist nur, dass der See für Raketentests genutzt wurde. Der Allgäukrimi „Seegrund” des Autorenduos Kobr/Klüpfl spielt am Alatsee.
