Impressive hike with great views and charming mountain scenery! The Gratlspitze has its charm from every side - with this circular hike you will experience many different landscapes.
Understand climate change? On the hike, you will experience a primeval forest-like woodland and its structures up close. Important habitats such as wetlands and ponds are to be discovered.
The route starts in the centre of Alpbach village, where it goes briskly uphill - left past the church - via hiking trail no. A6 to Hausberg and further to Bischoferalm, then on to Hauser Joch. From here you have a wonderful view of the surrounding mountain world. Now you hike further without significant altitude gain to the Berggasthof Holzalm. After 3 hours, more than half the way is done and you can enjoy a long rest. Then you hike past the old ore mining area and the "Kaiserbründl" to the Hösllacke. From there you follow the hiking trail A23 downhill to the Kneipp facility and turn right onto the Alpbacher Heimatweg (A3). The beautiful "larch path" leads to the farms at Thierberg. From there you go steeply downhill once again back to the starting point in Alpbach.

Information about the Kupfersteig/Kaiserbründl:
Since ancient times, copper ores have been mined and processed in the surrounding area. Finds prove the first settlement 6300 years ago, about 3500 years ago copper extraction from these deposits. Scattered finds near the Kaiserbründl around the Gratlspitze indicate this prehistoric mining of ores in this area. In a property register from 1416, at the end of the Middle Ages the Thierberg (old name of Gratlspitz) is explicitly named among others as a copper ore supplier. A variety of tunnels and shafts were created to extract the sought-after ore. Since prehistoric times, the silver contained in the ore here was also interesting to be able to make coins later on.
The visible tunnel entrance on this plateau below the Kaiserbründl is the portal of the main adit called Oberfundstollen, from which extraction was carried out by mine carts. Lower tunnels, recognizable by their large spoil heaps, are the Unterfundstollen and the Peterstollen. The operation of this mine was shut down around the mid-19th century. The large stone visible here next to the Kaiserbründl is a so-called parting stone, where the ore was crushed and separated from the waste rock.
