Great mountain bike route with a wonderful view of St. Johann and St. Veit

In this route there is something for everyone: asphalt road, forest road, and woodland path. We start in Alpendorf and ride to St. Johann. A part along the Tauern cycle path and then up the hill past McDonald's to Rettenebenalm. The climb is quite strenuous. But once at the top, you're rewarded with a good snack board or a Kaiserschmarrn for your efforts. After Rettenebenalm, you go into the forest. Here you have to push the bike for a short distance. Then it goes gently down to Kinderalm and then on to St. Veit. By the way: Kinderalm is not a hut but a silent monastery. So you cannot stop here. From St. Veit, it goes back to Schwarzach again onto the Tauern cycle path and back to Alpendorf.

    Author’s recommendation

From the terrace of Rettenebenalm, you have a beautiful view.

On warm summer days, start early in the morning. The ascent is almost entirely in the sun.

    Roadbook

You start in Alpendorf and ride the road towards St. Johann, after the bridge turn right towards the train station. After about 500m go left under the railway underpass. Pass the cinema and continue straight ahead until you reach the zebra crossing over the federal road. Cross the road here and pass McDonald's on the right. At Palfenbauern, turn left up the hill to Rettenebenalm. Once at the top, the path to Kinderalm is very well signposted. Then you ride down the road to Schwarzach. At the roundabout, take the 2nd exit back onto the Tauern cycle path towards St. Johann. At the Plankenau power plant, ride past the playground onto the road and then turn left twice. Then you are back on the path heading towards Alpendorf.
