The main ridge of Čergov, located in eastern Slovakia northwest of Prešov, is a unique and excellent hiking area, because although we are in a mid-mountain range, the ridge dotted with meadows and groves offers an alpine atmosphere with continuous views. Čergov is great for hiking in all seasons: in spring and summer you can enjoy bird-song and floral walks, in autumn the colorful foliage of varied forests will enchant you, and in winter you can snowshoe without avalanche danger among the magical snowdrifts of the ridge, often above the clouds.

In the comfort of an unknown mid-mountain range

The ridge hike along the main ridge of Čergov (Čergő) is an ideal practice terrain if you are preparing for serious ridge hikes or want to get a taste of this style. This is an easy and comfortable ridge hike in its category, with cozy mountain huts and even cozier shelters for spending the mountain nights, so you won’t need much equipment or resupply. Despite this, the mountain range is little known, so you don't have to expect crowds.

Thanks to the semi-nomadic eastern Slavic (Rusyn) shepherds, the winding main ridge of Čergov, except for a few peaks and passes, is mostly open and wooded terrain, now enjoyed by hikers for its excellent conditions and panoramic views. On the relatively low altitude main ridge (900–1100 m), our path is accompanied by abandoned hay meadows, mixed forests, a few remaining regularly crowned pollarded trees, and birch groves. Of course, there is also the constant panoramic view, including a unique perspective of the towering peaks of the High Tatras.

    The ridge tour

The moderately difficult three-day circular tour can be completed in any direction. On the first day, we ascend from the center of Ľutina (Litinye) to the Čergov mountain hut (Chata Čergov). On the second day, we admire the beauty of the main ridge and stay overnight in the shelter on the other side of the ridge (Útulňa pod Minčolom). On the third day, we descend to the famous pilgrimage site of the Greek Catholics, touching on the ruins of Hőnig Castle (Nový hrad / Hanigovský (Nový) hrad), and return to our starting point in Litinye.

    Day 1: Ľutina (Litinye) – Chata Čergov (mountain hut), 13.3 km, 611 m ascent, 132 m descent, 4:00 hours

Day 2: Chata Čergov (mountain hut) – Útulňa pod Minčolom (shelter), 22.1 km, 939 m ascent, 844 m descent, 6:25 hours

    Day 3: Útulňa pod Minčolom (shelter) – Ľutina (Litinye), 10.6 km, 243 m ascent, 803 m descent, 3:00 hours

    Total, in snow-free conditions: 46 km, 1793 m ascent, 1779 m descent, 3 days

Recommended period for the hike: Suitable all year round, the terrain is ideal for preparation for more serious ridge hikes. As elsewhere in the Carpathian Basin, the best time includes the beginning and middle of the vegetation period (late April to late June), the most colorful autumn season (mid-September to late October), and the second half of winter (February and early March) because of longer daylight hours. In winter, prepare for significant snowdrifts on the ridge and deep snowwalking.

A detailed description of the tour can be found under the Route Description menu.

    Author’s recommendation

    • Visiting the wonderful main square of Bardejov, once built by Germans, and the Hervartov wooden church built without nails, the only one of its kind, is highly recommended (both are UNESCO-listed monuments).
    • In Slovakia, a network of shelters operated by civil organizations exists, made up of abandoned forest houses and shepherd accommodations. They offer a unique opportunity to spend the night outdoors in protected places without having to carry a tent. The shelter under Minčol (Útulňa pod Minčolom) is unique in that only a small bivy room is free to use, while the rest of the house operates as a key-access hut, so usage must be arranged in advance.
    • Čergov is not a national park, so camping is legally permitted in the area.
    • The mountain hut provides food and lodging; booking in advance is advisable. The hut mostly opens only on weekends.
    • The Mountain Rescue Service website details the accessibility and current hazards for hiking trails in the various mountain ranges. The Slovak text can be reliably translated into Hungarian or English using Google Chrome's browser translation function.

    Safety information

    • The hike passes through many open areas, potentially exposed to lightning. Always start early in the morning and only in stable weather to avoid thunderstorms typically forming in the afternoon and evening. However, even if caught in a storm in Čergov, it is not too dangerous as you can quickly take shelter among the trees and descend to lower altitudes.
    • Another hazard of hiking in open terrain is getting lost in fog, but in Čergov, this is not as serious as in real high-mountain conditions, since the path follows a clearly visible cart road or worn trail, and frequent markings help navigation through the often pierced forested sections.
    • The hike is also an excellent choice for beginner ridge hikers because there are two places where you can return to the Ľutinka stream valley: the Z marking leads back to Ľutina from both the Sedlo Lysina and Sedlo Pryehiby saddles.
    • In summer, after crossing the main ridge, you can descend back to the village (approximately 30 km), skipping the shelter, but completing the middle day section in winter, especially in deep snow, can be a serious challenge. Therefore, plan winter hikes for February or March when days are longer, and always aim for early starts. On the third morning, it's possible to climb to the main peak, shortening the distance of the second day.
    • Čergov hosts large mammals typical of the Carpathians (e.g., bears), so it is worth taking necessary precautions during the hike (use of bear bell, constant talking).
    • The mountain hut naturally provides drinks, and there is a spring at the shelter, but near the ridge, there is only one spring (its location indicated in the text); more springs are accessible with small detours under the Čergov peak. Prepare a large amount of drinking water for the second day, especially in summer!
    • It is important to know the Mountain Rescue Service phone number: 18300.

    Tips and suggestions

    • Before departure, it is worth checking a detailed weather forecast on one of the Slovak language sites. For this, enter the Slovak term for weather forecast, predpoveď počasia (or predpoved pocasia), and the Slovak name of the area or peak you intend to visit in the search engine. (Use Google Chrome browser for translation.)

    • The English-language mountain-forecast.com site is also reliable and useful, providing hourly, continuously updated weather information for peaks.

    • The hike can be most simply followed using the Természetjáró app, which contains the entire Carpathians and their hiking trails.

    • The Čergő mountain hut (Chata Čergov) supposedly only receives guests on weekends, and although crowds usually do not hike in this part of Slovakia, advance booking is recommended. The hut offers 40 beds in 2, 3, 4, 5, and 8-bed rooms. You may sleep with your own sleeping bag or request bedding.
    • The shelter below the main peak (Útulňa pod Minčolom) can be booked through the website of the civil organization that operates it. Contact them to arrange key handover. A modest (about €10/whole hut) contribution is requested for using the hut. You can heat the shelter if needed; it has benches and chairs, and upstairs you can sleep on the plank floor with your own sleeping pad. A fire pit is located in front of the hut.

    Detailed description of the tour

    Society in the valley

Slovakia basically shows the same territorial development difference from west to east as Hungary, and this becomes obvious when traveling towards our starting point, Ľutina (Litinye). However, Ľutina is a neat village, partly because it is a famous pilgrimage site. We can visit the shrine located in the upper part of the village at the end of our trip.

Unless we are lucky with the bus, we approach the mountains from Ľutina by walking along a low-traffic, unmarked country road edge. Near Olejníkov (Olajpatak), we get a distant, sad glimpse of the poverty situation in eastern Slovakia. Continuing, we see neat mountain houses, and at Majdan, we leave civilization behind with a rather archaic village view. At the end of the village, we head right following the S marking.

We walk for a long time along the S marking in the valley, and in its upper part, we encounter a real curiosity: a refurbished socialist-realist bus stop, which hosts a lovely exhibition commemorating the now extinct mountain villages hiding in the forest, Ambrušovce and Baranie scattered settlements. No buses run here anymore, but something is happening in this remote part of Slovakia, as some old wooden houses by the road are being renovated. We continue along the valley in this somewhat "Transylvanian" atmosphere, finally climbing out and ascending steeply to the Črchľa junction, then basically walking on level ground to the building of Chata Čergov (Csergő mountain hut). The hut is likely not crowded, so we might enjoy a peaceful evening at the end of the world. The original simple shelter was built by skiers at the end of the 1920s but was soon destroyed by fire. In 1929, within a few months, with the initiative of tourists from Prešov and with the help of locals, a hiking hut was built by a nature-loving military commander and his team, which remains the only one in the mountain range.

    Sunlit mountain ridge

The next day brings a very nice day full of views, walking over beautiful, varied, and pleasant terrain.

At the junction above the hut, we turn left following the K and P markings, soon unveiling the main ridge of Čergov: we arrive at the similarly named peak, which hosts a spacious meadow and a huge cross (Čergov, 1050 m). This is the first time we can scan the endless chain of mountains with our gaze, but it's worth noting that under the peak in the forest, the well-equipped and always open Útulňa Drina awaits those who enjoy sleeping in the wild under nomadic conditions. There is also a spring nearby.

Continuing along the ridge, we soon reach the Chuchułka saddle, where we turn left onto the K marking. From here on, all we have to do is enjoy the continuous revealing landscape while winding loosely through the ventilated meadows. Most of the time, there is only a hay meadow on one side of the ridge, so between forest patches, splendid views open alternately to one side or the other. Our gaze will most certainly be attracted by the unique High Tatras silhouette unveiled from the first peak’s 1098-meter-high Veľká Javorina.

Our atmospheric ridge hike is accompanied by crosses and shrines left over from the time of shepherding. In the smaller, nameless saddle after Veľká Javorina, there are benches by a large cross. From Solisko, a 1057-meter peak, we get an even more magnificent view of the dramatically sized High Tatras, then after long winding between beautiful meadows, birch groves, dwarf beeches, and forest patches, we descend to the mentioned Sedlo Pryehiby saddle, which naturally hosts a nice little chapel.

Our biggest challenge may lie ahead: about 200 meters of ascent awaits us, and it is important to know that shortly after the pass, the trail passes a developed spring. We return again to the ridge and, reaching the Sedlo Ždiare saddle, the meadows disappear. From here on, we cross the covered block of Hýrová, 1071 meters high, and in the latter half of our hike, we pass through a strictly protected forest reserve as well. In the saddle, there is a rain shelter with benches – many choose this spot as a camp during their tent hike (though there is no developed spring nearby).

    Dwarf beeches on Minčol peak

From the forests of Hýrová, we reach the charming hay meadow of Lazy, surrounded by religious paintings and dwarf beeches. The section between Lazy and the already visible main peak, Minčol (1157 m), is a strictly protected nature reserve, whose most characteristic residents are beech trees growing only low in height on the windy ridge – gnarled and stout-trunked, unforgettable companions in our hike. First, we climb up to the peak bearing the large cross (Kríž pod Minčolom), from where we get a better panoramic view than from the neighboring main peak. Beyond the Tarca Valley, the forested Levoča Mountains and the towering High Tatras are visible. We also have excellent views of the Pieniny, Spiš Magura, and the Low Beskids, as well as the Szalánc and Branisko mountain ranges.

Returning to the Lazy junction, we turn right onto the Z marking and descend steeply to the shelter named Útulňa pod Minčolom. The neat little house can be rented as a key-access hut system after prior reservation (see among the links).

    Farewell to Čergő

The day starts with a tiring climb along the Z marking, then from the Lazy junction, we walk along the familiar K marking back to the Ždiare saddle. From here, we follow the Z marking to start descending towards Ľutina. From the path on the side ridge, we get beautiful views of the stream valleys below in several places. After a long descent, at the Za hradom junction, we turn left onto the S marking, and shortly afterward, with a short left detour, we stand before the ruins of Hőnig Castle (Nový hrad / Hanigovský (Nový) hrad). The castle belonged to the neighboring village of Hanigovce (Hőnig), which was established in the 14th century by German noble settlers. According to descriptions, it was built by Mikcs Ban from the Ákos clan between 1320 and 1330, first out of wood, and then rebuilt into a stone castle with King Louis the Great’s permission in 1342. Later, it belonged to the Tarczay family, who supported János Szapolyai against Ferdinand of Habsburg. As a reprisal, the Habsburgs besieged and blew up the castle.

We descend through the hay meadows above the village and reach the border of Ľutina (Litinye), the largest shrine of the Greek Catholic Diocese of Prešov, which became a pilgrimage site after a Marian apparition in 1851. Chapels were built, and its church was designated a basilica minor by Pope John Paul II. We finish our tour by descending back along the S marking to the starting point, but if we have time, it is definitely worth taking a closer look at the shrines and chapels built on the hillside.
