After the first rays of sunshine kissed us awake on the scenic Baumgartnerhöhe, we take a deep breath and let our gaze wander over the turquoise shining Faaker See. Briefly touching civilization, we explore the untouched Faaker Moor nature reserve and parts of the idyllic forest landscape called Dobrova. It draws us to the place where the Romans once recharged their strength after a long journey – to Warmbad-Villach with its recently built KärntenTherme, where we gather energy for the next day.

The start of this stage is high above the turquoise shimmering Faaker See, the fifth largest lake in Carinthia, and passes by the ruins of Finkenstein Castle, which lies on a rock face dropping steeply to the south at the foot of the Karawanken mountains, continuing to Faak am See. This well-known tourist resort borders the Faaker Moor with its colorful, diverse fauna and flora and is well nestled between the Villach basin and Rosental. Along the idyllic forest landscape Dobrova it continues to the 122 km long Gail, one of the two major rivers flowing through Villach. After a short stretch along the Gail, the path leads to Warmbad. This part of Villach has always been known for its thermal water and is also home to the Kärnten Therme, which was newly opened in 2012. Architecturally, the spa is inspired by the look of the Dobratsch Nature Park and offers perfect relaxation after a day of hiking with attractive pool, sauna, and beauty areas.

    Author’s recommendation

For a culinary break, the Kirchenwirt in St. Stefan or the Finkensteiner Nudelfabrik in Müllnern is recommended.

    Roadbook

From Baumgartnerhöhe, the path this time leads us downhill to Altfinkenstein and from there towards the small village of Pogöriach. There we turn right towards Ratnitz and from there head toward the federal highway. We cross this and continue along the path towards Faak am See. In Faak, we turn left in the middle of the village onto Sankt Stefaner Weg and follow this until we reach a field path through the Faaker Moor. This leads straight on to Höfling, where we take Höflingerstraße up to the church square in St. Stefan (part of Finkenstein). There we turn right and follow Villacher Straße until the wayside cross, where we walk past on the left. The street turns into a field path, which we follow to the forest boundary. There the path branches off towards Müllern and leads through the beautiful deciduous forest, past an old wayside shrine. After crossing Müllnern heading west, we reach the bridge over the Gail. Immediately after crossing the bridge, we turn right and follow the path along the Gail. After passing under the motorway bridge, the river makes a right turn - there the path turns left towards Warmbad. After a short section through the forest, we come back out to open fields and keep left until we reach Zillerbad. From there, we continue along the Warmbachweg until the end. Then we already see on the right the end point of the stage, the new KärntenTherme Warmbad-Villach.

    Unanswered
