The "Ems cycle route" leads past almost untouched moors and forests, along cultivated meadows and fields, and lovingly maintained farms to the cultural-historical treasures, such as the uniquely beautiful hunting lodge Clemenswerth, to hidden mills, prehistoric megalithic tombs, and of course to lively small towns and idyllic villages.

The route runs directly through numerous touristically interesting towns with historic buildings as well as cultural attractions. Lingen, Meppen, Papenburg, Leer, and Emden, together with other towns, provide necessary service, supply, and leisure facilities in sufficient measure, including accommodation that meets the Bett & Bike quality standards.

    Special tourist sights:
The maritime open-air museum in Haren, the Meyer Werft in Papenburg, and the Ems barrier near Oldersum. Proximity to the Ems as well as to numerous lakes and canals offers a variety of leisure activities related to water.

As a historic trading place at the Ems crossing between Holland and Northern Germany, the former fortress town of Lingen is worth admiring. Lingen stands out in its historic core with many sights: at the market square the old town hall from the 15th century, the House of the Kivelinge from 1583, the "Old Post Office" from 1653, the Cross Church at University Square, the former university and professors' house, Palais Danckelmann (district court) and the Hellmann House with richly ornamented half-timbered gable in Burgstraße, to name just a few.

The town of Papenburg is the largest and oldest fen colony in Germany. There were around two dozen shipyards here, of which today only the Meyer Werft remains, specialized in building cruise ships. Worth seeing are the Meyer Werft and the Forum Alte Werft, a former Meyer Werft site which today functions as a cultural and conference center in Papenburg with city hall, theater on the shipyard, painting school and gallery, and boiler smithy.

The town of Leer, also called the "Gateway to East Frisia," is certainly worth a visit.
In the old town, numerous historic buildings from previous centuries can be found. The harbor, town hall with scales, and the Haneburg are as much attractions as the Evenburg in Loga. And those who come to Leer in October experience the traditional Gallimarkt, connected with the cattle market.

    Author’s recommendation

At the end of the route from the source to the mouth at Emden on the North Sea, a few days of relaxation on the island of Borkum are recommended.
