The Benedikt cycling route leads over a distance of 239 kilometers to the biographical stations of the childhood and youth of the late retired Pope Benedict XVI, who lived here between the Inn, Salzach and the Alps. The start and end point is the pilgrimage site Altötting.
Here we present to you the stage from Chieming via Seebruck to Seeon, Gstadt, Amerang up to Wasserburg, which runs over 69 kilometers through the Chiemsee-Alpenland region. Entry is possible anywhere, as it is a circular route.
On this route, you follow in the footsteps of the late former Pope Benedict XVI. There is much to discover - not only the biographical stations of the childhood and youth of the retired pope.
The Benediktweg is a circular route over 248 kilometers, signposted clockwise. It is mostly flat, so this cycling route is also suitable for families with children. A longer ascent in the area Waging - Wonneberg and Eggstätt - Wasserburg can be ridden with common touring bicycles and mountain bikes.

Safety information
- Always check the lighting system, brakes, tires and reflectors of your bicycle before starting!
- Wear bright, reflective clothing in poor visibility (dusk, darkness, fog, etc.). Alternatively: vest or foot bands with reflector strips.
- Especially in autumn and winter, leaves lying on the ground can conceal possible unevenness, roots, stones or holes in the path.
- Additionally, attach tall bicycle flags to your children's bicycles so that even the smallest riders are well visible in road traffic.

Route description Chieming - Wasserburg:
- Chieming (Sights: Parish church "Mariä Himmelfahrt" with largely neo-Romanesque equipment from 1884 and three Roman votive stones, former Schloss Neuenchieming – a parsonage directly on the lake (from 1642-1965) with stair tower and garden complex): via Stöttham and past the Baroque pilgrimage chapel Ising (and boarding school Schloss Ising) one reaches Seebruck after 7 kilometers.
- Seebruck (Sights: branch church St. Thomas (1474-77) of the Frauenchiemsee monastery, in the cemetery area remains of the castle wall, Roman museum): On the themed cycle path "On the trail of famous composers" (e.g., Michael Haydn as well) it goes through old Celtic-Roman cultural landscape and Truchtlaching on the Alz to Seeon. (Shortcut without Seeon: Chiemsee shore path to Gstadt (9 km)).
- Seeon (Sights: Benedictine monastery complex with St. Lambert monastery church (Romanesque origin, Gothic vault, partially Baroque after fire 1634-53), former convent buildings, St. Walburg side church (circa 1470) with cemetery, parsonage, former manorial farm and tithe barn): cycling towards Chiemsee, one reaches the village Pavolding, where some large-scale sculptures in the open air still recall the artist Prof. Heinrich Kirchner, who lived here and died in 1984. Slight ups and downs over Roitham, Stetten, Gollenshausen, Ed, and Breitbrunn lead to Gstadt on the Chiemsee after 17 kilometers.
- Gstadt (Sights: branch church St. Peter and Paul (15th century, baroque around 1720), Fraueninsel, Herreninsel. Bicycle depot at the landing stage): from here one cycles a short way back to Breitbrunn and then further on the bike route through the morainic landscape shaped by ice ages, the Eggstätt-Hemhofer lake plateau (Bavaria's oldest nature reserve) via Eggstätt (6 km), Höslwang (6 km) and another 5 kilometers to Amerang.
- Amerang (Sights: Amerang Castle, St. Rupertus parish church (originally Gothic, baroque in the 18th century), castle museum, Amerang farmhouse museum with historic buildings, Museum of German Automobile History): heading north on side roads, you reach Altbabensham (13 km) via Evenhausen, Hebertsham and Wimpasing. Here turn west; after the Penzinger lake you see the "Pearl of the Inn", Wasserburg. The last part is partly heavily trafficked until the Red Bridge, until you finally reach the richly frescoed Brucktor of the old town of Wasserburg.
- Wasserburg (Sights: St. Jakob parish church (15th century) with magnificent pulpit (Zürn brothers 1638), Church of Our Lady (14th century) with Gothic miraculous image of the type of the "Beautiful (Salzburg) Madonnas", late Gothic town hall with council chamber and large town hall hall, impressive citizen houses from the 15th and 16th centuries, Inn loop and historic townscape of the town of Wasserburg, leisure facility "Badria", Wasserburg museum, road maker museum, a boat trip with the Inn shipping company, beer catacombs)
