This varied jogging route takes you through Düsseldorf's oldest district and along the picturesque banks of the Rhine. You start in the historic old town of Kaiserswerth, which has been inhabited since the 7th century. The town was once its own island on the Rhine and developed around the Benedictine monastery. Today, the well-preserved ruins of the imperial palace and the Basilica of St. Suitbertus characterize the townscape.

The route follows the traditional towpath on which horses used to pull the Rhine ships upstream. As you follow the well-surfaced path, the Rhine is always at your side. The route is almost flat and is therefore suitable for runners of all abilities. After about half the distance, you will reach Wittlaer, where the Schwarzbach flows into the Rhine.

The combination of nature and history is particularly attractive. Between the Rhine floodplains and the extensive fields of the Kalkum countryside, you can enjoy unobstructed views of the river and the Rhine meadows opposite. The route is accessible all year round, although the mornings and late afternoons are particularly suitable for running. In spring and summer, you can experience the blooming floodplain landscape, while autumn impresses with its blaze of color.

    Author’s recommendation

After the run, it's worth taking a stroll through Kaiserswerth's old town with its historic half-timbered houses and cozy cafés on Klemensplatz.

    Safety information

Pay particular attention to cyclists and walkers, as the path is very busy, especially on sunny summer days. Sections may be flooded during high water.

    Roadbook

The route starts at the Stammhauskirche church in Kaiserswerth and initially heads north. You leave the old town and reach the towpath along the Rhine after a few hundred meters. The well-paved path leads you continuously along the riverbank.

About halfway along, you pass the crossing from Kaiserswerth to Wittlaer. You walk to the mouth of the Schwarzbach, where the path continues over a small bridge. Turn around there and walk back the same way.
