    Safety information

Despite the “unmissable” markings of the premium hiking trails, we recommend always carrying a suitable hiking map for safety reasons, so that, for example, in case of a thunderstorm or emergency you can quickly find a safe area.

Especially in autumn, it is important to pay attention to fallen leaves on the ground that can cover unevenness, roots, stones, or holes in the path. Trees may still be felled or branches may fall after storms. In adverse weather conditions, natural trails can become muddy and slippery. You must expect such trail impairments when undertaking a hike. Not all rocks or cliffs are secured with ropes or railings. Surefootedness is partially required. If you feel that certain sections of the paths are not passable for you, you should avoid them.

    Roadbook

The Rock Route is a 17.5 km circular route passing through several villages. Many starting points are therefore possible, but the recommended start is in the traditional spa town of Hauenstein. From the town exit on Weißenburger Straße, we follow the "red dot" marking up the steep path into the forest. For the next 4 km, the Rock Route and the Hauenstein Shoemaker's Path run together, and we are initially accompanied by its yellow marking. The ascent to Kreuzfelsen and shortly thereafter to Kahlen Felsen is rewarded with magnificent views over Hauenstein far below. The natural path along the rocks and through light forest is pure hiking pleasure, and we repeatedly pause as if not wanting to miss a moment of the here and now. On the further ascent, we pass the peaks of Weimersberg and Hülsenberg and reach the imposing Hühnerstein. The exciting “assault” on the summit should—provided you are not afraid of heights—not be missed! From the next junction, we then follow the green-blue marking and hike down a wide forest road past the Wasgauhütte to Schwanheim. We leave the town via Ringstraße and turn left at an impressive wayside shrine into the forest. Over a small ridge, we soon reach Dimbach. From its center, we follow the district road above the Dimbach to the village of Lug, about 1 km away. From here, we orient ourselves by the "blue cross" marking. Passing the church, we walk up the steep street Im Maisfeld and turn left into the forest at the edge of the village. A few more steps uphill bring us to a great viewpoint at Friedrichsfelsen—the ideal place for a refreshing break! From there, it continues to Spirkelbach, now on pleasantly descending forest paths. At the church, the “red dot” marking shows us the way again, leading us over a last ascent through the forest to the district road, which we follow to the town’s edge. From Landauer Straße, the Shoemaker's Path marking leads us past the Carmelite Convent back to the starting point.

    Equipment

Sturdy footwear, weather-appropriate clothing, sun and rain protection, as well as sufficient supplies of food and drinks should be taken if no places to stop or shop are available or open. Although the path is very well marked throughout, you should always carry a suitable hiking map for safety reasons.
