The Chestnut Route is a short walk that leads to the chestnut trees below the Kostenfels rock formation.
The Chestnut Route starts in the center of Rinnthal at the church. Opposite is an information board and a fountain. Follow the main street westward, towards Wilgartswiesen. Opposite the street Am Schwellborn, the Chestnut Route turns right. Now it goes uphill, passing under the B10 underpass. Here you can naturally hear the road noise of the federal highway. After the underpass, the Chestnut Route turns right, continuing slightly uphill. Then it goes calmly straight ahead to the chestnut trees. After about 1.5 km, the forest path meets a service road that leads you back to the village on the right. Via Schulstraße, you reach the main street and turn right back to the starting point, the church in the town center.
WATCH OUT! - Campaign for considerate coexistence in nature
- Always behave considerately, kindly, and attentively towards everyone you meet on your way.
- Respect nature, do not destroy plants and always stay on the paths. Try to avoid excessive noise and leave the forest before dusk.
- Remember to bring a trash bag and take your waste back home with you.
- Please keep your dog on a leash at all times. Other visitors and animals will thank you.
- For your own safety, observe all trail closures, even on weekends.
- Park only in designated parking areas. Leave space for emergency vehicles and agricultural machinery.
- Give priority to agricultural and forestry traffic.

Safety information
General rules:
Especially in autumn, pay attention that the leaves lying on the ground can cover unevenness, roots, stones, or holes in the path. After thunderstorms or heavy rain, trees may still fall or branches may break off. Especially in adverse weather conditions, natural paths can have muddy and slippery sections. Not all rocks or cliffs are secured with ropes or railings. Surefootedness is required in places. You must expect such path impairments when hiking. If you believe that some sections of the path are not passable for you, you should bypass them.
NOTE:
We strive to announce all closures caused by forestry work or hunting groups on this platform. However, there are situations when hiking trails are closed, and we might not have been informed. If you unexpectedly encounter a trail closure or detour, please follow the instructions for your own safety.

The Chestnut Route runs mostly through the village and thus has a high proportion of asphalt. The path can be well driven with off-road strollers. Due to the moderate ascents and descents, it is also well suited for inexperienced hikers. Benches invite you to rest along the way.
Those who want to extend the route can turn off at Schulstraße and take the Hüttweg to the Jungpfalz hut. Warning: steep ascent. The Jungpfalz hut is open for refreshments on weekends. From the Jungpfalz hut, the route continues flat along the Grimmeisen path initially up to the Kehrenkopf. Then you continue left down the Hüttweg to Rinnthal. On the way back, you also meet the Chestnut Route again below the Kostenfels.

Equipment
For our hiking routes, we recommend the following standard equipment:
- Sturdy footwear
- Clothing adapted to the weather
- Sun and rain protection
- Sufficient supply of food and drinks, as there are not always dining or shopping opportunities available or open.
- Even though the paths are very well marked throughout, it is advisable for safety reasons to always carry a suitable hiking map so that you can quickly find a safe area, for example, in the event of a thunderstorm or emergency.
