The marked hiking trail leads from Esthal through the village center to the Ritterstein "Schäfers Gericht". Further along we reach the Erfenstein castle ruins.
The Erfenstein Castle is a medieval spur castle. Erfenstein consists of two parts: Alt-Erfenstein and Neu-Erfenstein. Almost nothing remains of the older site, which is located above Neu-Erfenstein. The newer castle complex is dominated by the well-preserved bergfried (keep).
From the platform of the castle complex, enjoy the view of the opposite Spangenberg Castle and the valley below Erfenstein. Hard to believe, but a widely spread legend tells of a leather bridge that once spanned the Elmstein valley here.

Arriving via the Palatinate Hut Trail in Esthal, we pass through the small forest village to the end of the main street. Here, the white/red and later the white/green bars lead us over the Erfenstein castle ruins into the Erfenstein district. On the way through the village, we pass a grotto and cross both the Speyerbach stream and the tracks of the romantic steam railway "Kuckucksbähnel".
