Kandel - Circular route 2 around the Naturfreundehaus Bienwald
This circular route of the Naturfreunde leads on flat paths through the Bienwald. Along the way, you can discover its varied flora and fauna.
On this approximately 5 km long circular route starting at the Naturfreundehaus Kandel, you can enjoy the very special flora and fauna of the Bienwald. Without any climbs, this route leads through the forest and is also very suitable for inexperienced hikers. Afterwards, you can relax in the beer garden of the Naturfreundehaus and refresh yourself in a pleasant forest atmosphere.
UFFBASSE! - Campaign for respectful coexistence in nature
- Fire & Smoking – Lighting fires, smoking, and grilling are strictly forbidden in the forest and must be avoided at all times! Fires and thus severe damage to nature and wildlife can only be prevented this way.
- Be considerate on the way – Always behave foresightedly, kindly, and considerately towards everyone you meet on the path. This applies especially to farm roads, on which vintners, farmers, and foresters also work on weekends.
- Picnic & Waste – Remember a rubbish bag for the way and take your waste back home. Use only furnished rest areas for breaks and picnics.
- Nature conservation – Stay on the marked paths and avoid unnecessary noise when in nature. Leave the forest at the latest at dusk to not disturb the rhythm of nocturnal animals.
- Leash dogs – Please always keep your dog on a leash. Other visitors and animals will thank you.

Safety information
The last 750 m of the path run along the access road to the Naturfreundehaus. Please pay attention to traffic.
Hiking on natural trails and paths – Especially in autumn, be aware that fallen leaves on the ground can hide unevenness, roots, stones, or holes in the path. After thunderstorms or heavy rain, trees can still fall or branches may break off. Particularly in adverse weather conditions, natural paths can have muddy and slippery sections. Surefootedness is sometimes required. You must expect such path impairments on your hike. If you think certain sections are impassable, you should avoid them. Despite path markings, we recommend always carrying an appropriate hiking map for safety reasons so that you can quickly find a safe area in case of thunderstorms or emergencies. Path closures and diversions must be strictly observed.
Hazard situations – Should an emergency occur, quick help is needed. Even if mobile phones can send GPS signals, the classic rescue points are often the fastest. These are located in places easily accessible for rescue vehicles. Remember the points with the green signs and a white cross. In an emergency, return there and give the number on the sign during your emergency call. This way, rescue workers know where to find you.

Roadbook
At the Naturfreundehaus Kandel, there is a board with the circular hiking routes displayed. From the Naturfreundehaus, we follow the marking "2" (waymark: 2 hands with a 2). A straight path leads to the Badallee. Here we turn right, always following the marking with the "2". After a few meters, we reach the Abenteuerpark Kandel. Here we turn right again and continue to follow the "2". The path goes through a section of the adventure park, and from April you can watch the daring climbers here. After about 600 m, you reach the retirees’ bench, inviting you to rest. Here, the path leads us left over the Otterbach stream to the Neugraben. The waymark leads us along the idyllic Neugraben to a shelter. Here we turn right onto the driveway to the Naturfreundehaus.
A shortening (marked by 2 hands with "1") or extension of the route (marked by 2 hands with "3") is possible on the way – both signs lead back to the Naturfreundehaus Bienwald.
You can also start the route in the Badallee. Here is an information board with the circular routes 1, 2, and 3, all leading to the Naturfreundehaus. Those arriving by train follow the signage from Kandel station towards Naturfreundehaus/AbenteuerPark Kandel to the Badallee and then follow the respective waymarking.

Equipment
For our hiking tours, we recommend the following standard equipment:
- sturdy footwear
- weather-appropriate clothing
- sun and rain protection
- sufficient supply of food and drinks, as there are not always places to eat or shop available and open
- Even though the paths are very well marked throughout, it is advisable for safety reasons to always carry a suitable hiking map, so that in emergencies such as thunderstorms you can quickly find a safe area.
Additionally, we recommend mosquito protection in the Bienwald, especially in the warmer months.
