ZIN-DW - Moiry Glacier - Cabane de Moiry - Dam
Hiking in the middle of the glacier world
From the bus stop Moiry Glacier, you climb to the hut, a unique viewpoint over the Moiry glacier. On the way back, you walk along the high path on the 'edelweiss flank' to the Moiry Barrage bus stop.
Author’s recommendation
- The Cabane de Moiry was greatly expanded a few years ago and has become somewhat of a mountain hotel. Whether the expansion was successful is up for debate. A picnic with a view of the glacier, inside or outside the hut, is an absolute must!

Directions
The starting point of this route is the large parking lot at the Moiry Glacier bus stop, just south of the reservoir. To start the route, immediately follow the signposts to the Cabane de Moiry. Actually, you cannot miss it as there is only one path.
During the climb, you walk for a long time along or on a lateral moraine of the Moiry glacier. The glacier world at the back of the Moiry valley gets closer and closer. As you walk on the east flank (little sunshine), you may often have to cross snowfields (especially in early July). Extra walking poles are not superfluous.
At an altitude of about 2600 meters, you begin the last part of the climb, a fairly steep zigzag path. Once past the zigzag, it is just a few hundred meters over large boulders to the hut, which was renovated and expanded a few years ago.
You return along the same path until at an altitude of 2520 meters, you spot the path that runs more or less horizontally and follows the eastern shore of the reservoir. Slightly undulating (you still climb to about 2600 meters), you walk further towards the dam. Along the way, you cross fields scattered with edelweiss (protected).
Once you reach the dam, follow the clear zigzag path down and take the bus at the dam stop.

Driving directions
There
- Drive out of Zinal. You pass the power station in Mottec. Just past the avalanche gallery, go straight ahead at the hairpin bend towards Grimentz (watch out for oncoming traffic coming from Ayer!)
- In Grimentz, the road ends at a T-junction (at the post office). Turn left towards Moiry and shortly afterwards keep right (uphill road). After about 8 km you arrive at the foot of the dam. Continue following the road. After some hairpin bends, you must pass through a tunnel (watch out for oncoming traffic!). The tunnel ends at the dam.
- Once at the dam, follow the macadam road to the left alongside the reservoir. Just beyond the end of the lake is the parking lot of Moiry Glacier.
Return
- The excursion ends at the dam. In the afternoon around 3:45 pm, there is a bus passing the dam going to the Glacier. Take this bus and get off at the last stop of Moiry Glacier. Note, there are no buses later in the day!
- By car, drive back to the dam and further to Grimentz. At the post office, turn right towards Zinal.
- A few kilometers further, the road joins the road from Ayer to Zinal (at a hairpin bend). Drive diagonally right further to Zinal.
