Via Paradiso - Stage 2
Between lake and mountain: shady gorges and sunny meadows above the Millstätter See.
From the historic town Millstatt am See, the shady gorge path of the Riegerbach initially leads us to the sunny terrace above the lake. On our way to Seeboden, we pass sunny mountain farms and repeatedly enjoy breathtaking views of the Millstätter See. Everyday life recedes into the distance as we let ourselves be enchanted by the beauty of the landscape. Along the route, farm shops invite you to linger, and the old Sommeregg castle, which we can visit on our way via Treffling to Seeboden on Millstätter See, is an absolute highlight.
Tip:
Hike carefree on the Via Paradiso! The official Via Paradiso Info & Booking Center with the award-winning team of Trail Angels is happy to support us. Especially when we want to combine personal freedom and the longing for something special with service, comfort, and safety on our hike.

Author’s recommendation
In the evenings, we let ourselves stroll like in the days of summer holidays along the Seeboden lakeside promenade of Millstätter See. Our walk ends on one of the many lake terraces or in one of the parks, where we pleasantly unwind our day at sunset.

Safety information
Proper behavior in the mountains
-
Careful route planning based on descriptions and hiking maps is essential for a successful mountain hike.
-
Equally important is to correctly assess the mountain experience, fitness, surefootedness, freedom from dizziness, and endurance of all participants.
-
Never leave the marked hiking trails and avoid shortcuts.
-
Get information about the weather conditions before the hike and return to the valley if the weather deteriorates.
-
The mountains are for everyone. Helping to preserve and keep them clean is the duty of every hiker. Take waste down to the valley and protect the animal and plant world.
-
Always keep dogs under control and on a short leash. If an attack by a grazing animal is foreseeable, immediately release the dog.
-
Austrian farmers make an important contribution to preserving our alpine landscape. Visitors are asked to respectfully adapt to this beautiful landscape.
-
Treat the people working here, nature and animals with respect.
Here are the most important emergency numbers in case of an accident in Austria:
140 Alpine emergency call
144 Ambulance emergency call
112 European emergency call (possible from all networks. Turn off the mobile phone and after turning it on dial "112" instead of the PIN)

The UNESCO Biosphere Park Carinthian Nockberge
Majestic, powerful, and unique – the UNESCO Biosphere Park Carinthian Nockberge is an alpine jewel with unique natural treasures, a diverse cultural landscape as well as rare animal and plant species. For centuries, people have lived here in harmony with nature. Gently rolling with peaks over 2400 meters and picturesque alpine meadows – the Biosphere Park Carinthian Nockberge is a rare natural idyll in the midst of the Austrian Alps covering an area of about 500 square kilometers.
In 2012, the UNESCO designated it as a biosphere park. The park is based on the three pillars of sustainability: ecological balance, economic security, and social justice. Life here is in harmony with nature and the rare flora and fauna are respected and valued.
Regional products, processed according to old traditions, reflect careful work based on inherited recipes. Trained biosphere park rangers promise unforgettable tours for families, and in several educational programs, this knowledge is also passed on to students. Regardless of the season, the biosphere park always offers a treasure chest full of experiences.

Roadbook
The first meters of this stage through Millstatt are the same as the last meters of the previous stage: From our starting point in Seepark / Via Paradiso information board in Millstatt we walk up the footpath to the main street. After crossing, we go through a gate to the left of Lindenhof, walk the cobbled alley and through the Millstatt monastery up to the main square. Along the main square to the right, then at the end go left up the street and at a fork in the road take the right street towards Obermillstatt and walk about 50 m further. Immediately behind a house, the Way of the Cross or the gorge path (No. 193) starts going uphill to the left. We take this up the steps to a fork in the path. Here we leave our yesterday's route and walk down the gorge path to the Riegerbach stream.
Now we walk the very beautiful gorge of the Riegerbach first on the right, then on the left side of the stream upwards. After some time, we cross a bridge back to the right side of the stream until we reach a road – always parallel to the stream. We cross the road and follow a now wider path with the sign "gorge path" which continues along the stream upwards. Then we go diagonally to the left up over a bridge and at the next fork take the path left out of the gorge in the direction of "Laubendorf". After a short stretch on an asphalt road, we turn right onto a hiking trail, which we follow uphill (do not miss the path straight ahead in a slight right curve), until a hiking trail branches off to the left in the direction of Öttern. Forest and meadow terrain and finally a gravel road lead us to the asphalt toll road in the direction of Schwaigerhütte. A short detour to the farm shop "nockfränz" is recommended here.
We walk down the road until at the first left bend, we continue straight along the driveway. There we immediately turn left again onto the hiking trail, which takes us downhill through the forest to a small asphalt road. Left down two hairpin bends and then over a bridge to a meadow path (signpost "Laubendorf"), which we follow with slight ups and downs to houses (we are at the upper end of Laubendorf). A small asphalt road leads us to a slightly larger asphalt road, which we follow uphill until a signpost "Berghof Burgstaller" at a farm points to a field path to the left. Through the farm and along the field path, until we turn left downhill onto a hiking trail towards Tangern. Beautifully downhill through the forest and at a bench and a wooden bridge, follow the right hiking trail towards Tangern. Soon the trail becomes a forest road and we reach an asphalt road, which we follow left down to Tangern.
Immediately behind the town sign a field path branches off to the right. Across fields and later left over a forest ridge uphill and then down to another field. Now we follow the field path on the right and then straight on until we arrive at Treffling (observe the signpost "Treffling"!).
At the beginning of the village, we cross the stream to a small road below the church and follow it to the left to a slightly larger road.
Now down to the left past the Pension Kärnten until we reach an even larger asphalt road. We cross the road and follow the small asphalt road opposite (path No. 4). At the next fork turn right and pass Sommeregg castle on the right and always downhill with the church tower in sight until in front of the church. A short detour to the farm shop Löscher (opening hours: Thursdays 3-6 p.m. and Saturdays 9 a.m.-12 p.m.) would be recommended here. Down a left curve to the main road. We turn left onto it, but immediately right again into a small asphalt road. Somewhat quirky through a farm, we reach a meadow path, which we follow straight down to the stream. Over a bridge and now always left of the stream on a beautiful hiking trail down to the main road – we are now already at the beginning of Seeboden.
We walk a short way down the main road to a waterwheel on the left side. There it ends in a footpath, which we follow to a residential block. In front of the residential block turn left and then behind it again to the right to the church and further to the main street. 50 m on the street to the left and we are at the beginning of the promenade, which takes us straight (below via a parking lot) to the flower park directly on the Millstätter See, the destination of our stage.
