Treasures of the Leiningers: Hardenburg-Schlosseck-Rahnfels route
Challenging route to three castle ruins, one of the highest peaks of the northern Palatinate Forest, moss-covered rocks, and a shelter hut with majestic views.
The ruin Schlosseck is a real insider tip: The structure, built from massive squared blocks hidden in the forest, was probably built by the Counts of Leiningen around 1200 and consisted of a ring wall and a pentagonal bergfried (keep). The highlight of the visit is the portal reconstructed in 1883 with rich decorations. The Rahnfels with the Frankenthaler Hut (picnic spot) is, at 516 m height, one of the highest elevations of the northern Palatinate Forest. The view extends over the Hardenburg castle ruin, the Limburg monastery ruin, and the vineyards as far as the Rhine plain. The Nonnenfels (picnic spot at the end of the route), named after the legend of the unhappy daughter of the Count of Leiningen (information board), was formerly a medieval rock castle. A detour to the monumental castle and fortress ruin Hardenburg should definitely not be missed. The Hardenburg was the residence of the Counts of Leiningen for almost 400 years.

General information:
Especially in autumn, take care as fallen leaves on the ground can hide uneven spots, roots, stones, or holes on the path. After thunderstorms or heavy rains, trees can still fall or branches can drop afterwards. In adverse weather conditions, natural paths may have muddy and slippery sections. Not all rocks or ravines are secured with ropes or railings. Surefootedness is required in places. You must expect such path impairments when hiking. If you consider certain sections impassable, you should avoid them. Despite the "unmistakable" marking of the premium hiking trails, we always recommend carrying a suitable hiking map for safety reasons, so that you can quickly find a safe area during a storm or emergency. Road closures and detours must be strictly observed.
Danger situations:
If an emergency arises, quick help is needed. Although mobile phones can send GPS signals, the classic rescue points are often the fastest. These are located at places easily accessible by emergency vehicles. Remember the points with green signs and a white cross. In an emergency, return to them and give the number on the sign when calling for help. This way, rescuers know where to find you.
Note:
We strive to announce all closures caused by forest work or hunting groups on this platform. Nevertheless, there may be situations where hiking trails are closed and we were not informed. If you unexpectedly encounter a closure or detour, please observe the instructions for your own safety.
Tips and suggestions
Roadbook
We start at the forest car park "Klausental" and follow the signposts "Treasures of the Leiningers: Hardenburg-Schlosseck-Rahnfels route" towards Nonnenfels. We reach the ruin (picnic spot) after about 170 meters. The path then leads us uphill through the Pfaffental. At the spring source of the Pfaffenbach, we keep to the left. (Straight ahead we can see the path that will later lead us back to this spot.) We walk along the wide path to the next signpost. This points right into a trail. Here we go uphill to the ruin Schlosseck (picnic spot). After the visit, we continue uphill on the trail to the Frankenthaler Hut (picnic spot) on the Rahnfels. From there the signposts lead us further to the "Rote Hohl". Going downhill, we soon reach the spring source of the Pfaffenbach again. Here we keep left to get back on the narrow enchanted path to the ruin Nonnenfels (picnic spot). From here, it is only a few meters back to the car park.
