From the Schönfeldhütte the path initially leads up to the Taubensteinsattel - the first viewpoint of this stage.
Experienced hikers cross to the Taubensteinhaus, descend to the Kleintiefental Alm and ascend the Rotwand from the east side. If you are not quite sure or prefer a very leisurely route, you take the path via Taubenstein and Lämpersberg to the Rotwandhaus. After a nice snack, it goes down the picturesque Pfanngraben with its many pools to the Valepp and northwards along it to the Albert-Link-Hütte, the well-deserved destination for the second day of the Three-Lake-Route.
Author’s recommendation
The Albert-Link-Hütte is well known far beyond the district for its good cuisine. Here, you can still enjoy true homemade cooking, baking, and smoking – and you can taste it in every bite. It is very tempting when a Kaiserschmarrn is carried past you until you can no longer resist ordering one yourself.
Treat yourself to this delicacy, you have earned it today!

Safety information
If you do not feel quite confident in uneven terrain:An easier but equally beautiful path to the Rotwandhaus leads from the top station of the Taubenstein cable car over the Lämpersberg to the Rotwandhaus. This path is much flatter than the one described above and clearly easier and therefore more comfortable to walk. The trail is well marked from the Taubensteinsattel. Plan about one hour from there to the Rotwandhaus.

Route sketch: Schönfeldhütte – Taubensteinhaus – Miesingsattel – Rotwandhaus – Rotwand – Pfanngraben – Albert-Link-Hütte
After a restful sleep and nourishing breakfast, you descend briefly on the road with your backpack shouldered, until a signpost on the left indicates the ascent to the Taubensteinsattel below the upper station of the Taubenstein cable car. Now it goes up over the meadow slopes of the Oberer Lochgraben into the saddle and in a few minutes on the now slightly downhill hiking trail over to the Taubensteinhaus. From the house (note: please observe the information on the wildlife protection area established in 2021 after the Taubensteinhaus and do not leave the hiking trail) the path continues downhill over gentle alpine meadows in a southeastern direction to the Kleintiefental Alm and on a good trail in steep switchbacks upwards again to the Miesingsattel (1704 m). Now about 100 meters down again into the basin of the Großtiefental Alm, where the trail crosses right (southwest) over to the Kümpflscharte. With a short uphill you reach the notch and in a few minutes the beautifully located Rotwandhaus (1737 m). Now you are only 150 meters higher and half an hour away from the Rotwand (1884 m), the day’s summit goal with its overwhelming view far into the High Tauern.
Return the same way to the Rotwandhaus and in a slightly descending traverse in a few minutes to the Kümpflscharte. Here the path branches off southwards down to the Pfanngraben via the Kümpflalm. Always follow the Pfanngraben on the increasingly wider path to the Waitzinger Winterstube and the road in the Valepp valley. On the romantic hiking trail along the Rote Valepp you finally stroll in 30 minutes to the Albert-Link-Hütte (1053 m), where you will be welcomed with homemade bread, smoked bacon and cheese. Enjoy the excellent cuisine in the evening and the cozy dormitories at night!
